I watched a similar docking of a Cozumel ferry at an open ocean pier in the Yucatan in very rough seas. The Captain took several runs at it before he made a successful landing. I got the feeling that it was a pretty routine landing in those waters. I used to take the Long Island Ferry twice a week when I was working on Long Island and commuting home to MA on weekends. Some crossings from CT to the tip of Long Island got pretty rough with strong wind, especially in the winter months. The ferry loaded and unloaded at it's bow, so it didn't have to back in to the dock. They also had stout pilings that extended out into the water the full length of the ferry, so once the ferry captain was lined up, he could just to slow ahead and the pilings guided it in. could |

If look look closely you'll notice the bow anchor rode. They usually drop the bow anchor to keep it steady when backing down. |
