I haven't ever seen hail that big but we do get the jelly bean sized
stuff several times a summer.

Anyone know what that contraption with the wire cage that was mounted
near the bow is?

I wondered about that also, think it's a hydraulic windlass, possibly
for pulling pots or other fishing gear. I suppose it could be used
for weighing anchor also.

It is the roller/capstan for pulling the net

It's either a guide reel for hauling in bouys/nets or it's a cage for
the ship's carrier pigeons.
