As infrequently as I fly, I haven't flown coach in years unless it was
on Southwest where it's not an option. Even Spirit has an upgrade to a
2X2 seat with a lot of legroom for $50 or so. Life is too short to save
a few bucks to be cramped for 3-5 hours. You are right about the price
difference. If you plan ahead it's cheap.

crashes while flying their small private planes, and one died in the
crash of a private jet.

safer commercial jets.
People die in commercial aircraft also. I used to like to fly commercial.
But over the years, the seating got tighter, and the hassles got bigger. I
still fly a few times a year. I was going to get a private pilots license
years ago, but not enough time with work, school and racing cars.

Just spend a few extra bucks and fly up front.

By the time you factor in all the BS fees it isn't even that much more
on a lot of routes.

That's where you cash in the FF miles! They accumulate quickly if you
use their card for everyday purchases and don't waste them on short,
cheap, flights.

not horrible and the "space seat" on Air New Zealand was not that much
different than the 1st class seat.

Given the kind of money you guys are talking about, I wonder what a cruise would
cost. At least it would be enjoyable.

Cheaper per day. Our trip to South Africa region was about $25k for two.
3.5 weeks. NZ and Tahiti, OZ was about $22k for 6 weeks.

I have a couple 100k of AMerican Airline FF miles. There are only a few
tickets to the South Pacific a year on their partner airlines. Short
cheap, I fly South West.

We had more flying, but shorter distance mostly. LAX to Tahiti, 8 hours,
Tahiti to Auckland 4.5 hours, Auckland to Cannes, Australia, 5.5 hours. We
did do the direct Auckland to LAX on the return. Travel agent said approx
$10K for economy plus extra.
