The other day I was bragging about my old Vista HP laptop and how well
it still worked after almost 7 years of use and rarely ever being turned
off.

Well, it just died. Screen suddenly went black and lots of crackling
sounds out of the speakers. Now it won't boot up. The little hard
drive light that normally flashes while in operation is not lit at all.

Can't complain. Got my money's worth out of it.

Dug out the Win 7 laptop that I've been saving as a backup. Haven't
used it at all since last December when I took a trip down to South
Carolina. Hope to get a few years out of it.

7 years from a well used laptop is pretty good in my experience. I've
only one that did better. It was an old Panasonic Toughbook that I
bought "off lease" about 10 years ago. The hard drive finally croaked
last summer after I left it turned on in bright sunlight on a hot day.

Your lucky. My 15 U.S. Year windows XP office tower shot a flame out the upper fan vent and put a minor scorch mark on the wall. Glad I was there when it happened. I now have a win7 lappie that does the job really well.

Now you will get a chance to upgrade to windows 10 before you get too
used to 7. My wife's windows 7 upgraded easier than my 8.1 machine. No
hiccups from either machine so far.

Yeah, I fired up this Win 7 computer and almost immediately got a notice
that I can upgrade to Win 10.

I think I am going to hold off for a while. You have a year (from July
29th) to upgrade.

I like Win 7. Always have. It's stable, fast enough plus this computer
isn't a touch screen, so the tablet-like "swiping" feature doesn't
apply. I don't like them anyway. I have enough trouble using my stupid
Android cell phone.

Thanks, that's good to know. I've got Win 7, but think I'll hold off for a few
months. That might be a good project for a day when the golf course is covered in
that white stuff.

If you are not running tablet apps, touch screens etc, why would you
want 8 or 10?

I am.
I do.
Windows apps are not the same as android apps, Fer instance, the map app
is awesome. You can download (easily) all the maps you will ever need,
for off line use.
Scrolling, sizing, drawing, moving and all the other tablet stuff works
fine.
Plus "10" does things F-A-S-T-E-R.

But, If it is not for you, I understand. :-)
