I bought a Mossberg 590 marine shotgun for the boat. We'll see how well
it holds up. It will need constant oiling, I'm sure but it should fare
better than blued or parkerized.

Gun 33. Good thing I bought another safe!

Did you get the shot gun for personal security or for the occassional
shark/python/gator?

I've never felt the need to carry a gun on the boat in the US, and
carrying one internationally opens up a whole can of worms clearing in
and out of customs. There are guys in Mexico doing long jail time for
even minor infractions plus their boats were seized.

I bought that gun for shooting clay birds from that boat in open water
when the fishing is slow. I've always carried a small 9mm for the
critters that might board if there was an engine problem on the inland
boat that lacks a trolling motor and wouldn't benefit from one anyway.

That would be fun but the rivers are narrow and there is too much of a

Only time I carry any gun on a boat is when I'm in my Jon boat going out on the Big Muddy creek at flood times. A .44 mag loaded with snake shot.

Black snakes are cool. Moccasins are fair game.

The only guy I knew who "packed" regularly was a wildlife cop I used to
fish with at the artificial reefs 15-20 miles off of Jacksonville. He'd
shoot any really large sharks he caught. Fortunately, he only caught one
all the times I was out fishing with him. I thought what he was doing
was disgusting and told him so. Might have even been illegal.

Sad story. When we first moved back to the DC area, I was out on my
SeaPro Bay Boat with a much younger, unmarried buddy. We got pulled over
by a beautiful blonde Maryland wildlife officer who wanted to make sure
we were "legal" in terms of license and cooler contents. She was very
nice. So, naturally, my single buddy hit on her and managed to snag a
date. About a year or two later (the details are foggy) she was shot and
killed while on duty by, I think, some guys in a fast boat engaged in
the drug trade.

My gosh, we were at Smith Mountain Lake State Park for a week, followed by a week in
southern Michigan and Shipshewana, Indiana. Have you been to either place?

SML state park is one of the best I've seen. Plus, I caught some large- and
smallmouth bass. Rented a pontoon boat, and had a glorious time with a bunch of
friends.

I suppose I missed a lot of good posts from you. My loss.
