Six Baltimore Cops Charged...
(Reuters) - Six Baltimore police officers will face criminal charges,
including second-degree murder and manslaughter, in the death of a black man who was arrested and suffered a fatal neck injury while riding in a moving police van, the city's chief prosecutor said on Friday. Prosecutor Marilyn Mosby said Freddie Gray, who died a week after his April 12 arrest, was in handcuffs but otherwise was not restrained inside the van. The officers failed to provide medical attention to Gray even though he asked for help on at least two occasions. Gray's death has become the latest flashpoint in a national outcry over the treatment of African-Americans and other minority groups by U.S. law enforcement. Warrants have been issued for the arrest of the officers charged, Mosby said at a dramatic news conference in front of a city office building across from Baltimore City Hall. In addition to murder and manslaughter, charges include assault, misconduct and false imprisonment. - - - Wow. Fast. :) |

Fast. :) It sounds like the cops threw Gray into the back of the police van and took him for a wild ride without benefit of a seat belt. During the ride Gray was bounced around and struck his head on a bolt in the truck which may be the cause of his broken neck. The preliminary autopsy report says his injuries are like those of being in a car wreck. Then, the cops stopped and checked on Gray finding him unconsciousness and injured. Instead of calling for medical help right away, they picked up another guy, put him in the van and drove normally, setting up a possible alibi. If the above is proven, indeed those responsible should be charged with murder. |

The preliminary autopsy report says his injuries are like those of being in a car wreck. That "wild ride" stuff is just bull****. He was injured when he was taken down. I thought so also initially based on the video that has been shown over and over. However, if you watch closely at the end of it when he enters the van, he appears to do so under his own power. He couldn't do that with a broken neck. Then, the cops stopped and checked on Gray finding him unconsciousness and injured. Instead of calling for medical help right away, they picked up another guy, put him in the van and drove normally, setting up a possible alibi. If the above is proven, indeed those responsible should be charged with murder. Those cops won't get convicted of anything beyond negligence, unless one or more cop a plea, or the trial is held in Baltimore, which is unlikely. As usual, the media is jumping the gun and misrepresenting the process. The six cops have only been charged so far. They have not been indited. That will happen after they are arraigned and after a grand jury reviews the evidence. My guess is that the charges will stick and most, if not all, will spend the next 10-30 years in prison. |
