....when I was about eight years old, I had a bathtub toy submarine that
rose and sank, and was powered, if memory serves, by baking powder.

It was very much like this:

http://www.amazon.com/Diving-Submari.../dp/B000V4KSHA

It operated just like a real submarine, so I am sure I am qualified to
drive a Los Angelese class attack sub.

I had one of those submarines.
We used to get them in boxes of breakfast cereal.

Yeah. I don't recall whether it came in the cereal box or if I sent a
quarter offf somewhere with a boxtop.

They have R/C controlled submarines now. A friend of mine has one it can dive down to about 20' or so. A fun toy.

As kids my sister and I sent in a boxtops and receiver silver dollars.
She got a 1929 and I got an 1882. I still have mine 50 years later.
Don't say anything, but I think if I checked my collection, I probably
have hers also. :-)
I collected coins when I was about 7 to 12 years old. I had old coins
then, now they are fifty years older, might be fun to get them out and
check.
Man, where did 50 years go.

I sent off a quarter. And it was a "frogman.' Never saw a sub.
It was good for a month waiting for the mail, and then 5 minutes of
watching it go up and down.
Money would have been better spent on a squirt gun.

There was one box top toy that was actually quite cool. It was a
plastic rocket that you filled half way with water and then mounted on
a small air pump device with a trigger assembly. The idea was to pump
up the remaining space in the rocket with compressed air and then pull
the trigger to launch. It worked pretty well as I recall.

Did anything you got for 2 box tops and a quarter really live up to
the expectations?

The rubber band shooting handgun I got when I was 9 did. It was a
semi-automatic.

Think I had one of those. Don't think I got it with a boxtop though.
Yeah, it was cool for the times.

It was the only thing I remember getting with a boxtop.
I moved up to the Johnson Smith catalog quite early.

Whoopee cushions?

Hand buzzer and staining chewing gum. Fake dog turds.
Whoopee cushion later, when I became sophisticated.

Yup we had them but it was old news. I still have an old book I found
in a book store in the 50s called "101 things a boy can make" and that
gun was one of them, made from wood, not plastic.
I had an old table top jig saw my grandfather gave me and I was
banging them out.

Rubber band guns weren't accurate enough. I was a pro 2-handed shooter,
hitting flies when they lit from across the room.
Had consistent rubber bands, from my paper route.
75 cents a box. Probably +500.

I had one of the $4.99 blank guns, shot .22 crimp blanks.
I wish I had one today.
A loud bang still seems to be the most effective training aid for Mr
Ed, although he has really gotten much better. I haven't needed a fire
cracker in months.
His running days seem to be over.

I always sort of wanted a carbide cannon, but never pulled the trigger.
They looked good.

Yup I had one. The trick was to get the optimum amount of water. It
wasn't exactly half.

... Then we discovered dry ice. Screw that wimpy pump.

The ice cream man started making as much selling dry ice as he did ice
cream. I suppose the safety nazis would lose their minds about
something like that these days.

I can remember making rockets out of aluminum tubing. Crimp the nose and
neck down the exhaust and fill with aluminum and sulphur powder.
