That was really just the rough in. I came back later with a square
shovel and cleaned them up before I put in the steel and formed it up
for a stem wall.
It was about 2 yards of dirt by the time I was done.

Then the walls went up on the stem wall.

You could never get away with that up here.

Because of regulatory issues or frost heaves?

Both. Footings need to be at least 4' below the ground level.

Afterthought:

Of course in Florida at 4' you'd likely hit water. :-)

I frequently stared in wonderment at the standards for commercial
construction in Florida. After Hurricane Andrew, I went down there with
a small team of engineers to help research and write a report. Everyone
expected to see jerry-built stick houses and apartments blown over, but
we were amazed at the number of large tip-up concrete structures that
were blown flat. Codes and inspections supposedly were tightened after
that, but I wonder. A decade later, I was out north of Clearwater out on
two public school sites and a generating plant under construction and
was again amazed by the engineers I was with who were pointing out
really serious code violations. The explanation was that "the fix" was
in. Probably still is, eh?

That's just about right, at least at our place. I've dug two 4 ft
holes recently and hit water in both places.

Weren't you some sort of quasi military engineer who specialized in blowing
up bridges, villages, women and children? You should offer up your expert
opinion on why that chunk of concrete broke loose. Did a model airplane hit
it? A golf ball? A round from one of your many firearms? Was it whacked by
the roof of an RV?

It was no doubt a sociopathic piece of concrete that didn't know right

Most likely union labor did a ****-poor job of pouring the concrete.

Well, there's no question why you have so many hobbies...you can't get
laid. Try a different sort of Valentine's gift.

Harry, I'm not the one continuously bringing up penis's, vaginas, getting laid, etc.

Got sex on your mind, Krause?

Did you forget his frequent posts about models? Then there is that
