Mr. Luddite January 27th 15 06:46 AM

Round 1 done

Went to bed at about 8pm planning on getting up around midnight to see
if plowing was necessary. It was. I didn't want to let the snow get
too high because it gets difficult to see where things are.

Just finished doing our driveway and the driveways of two neighbors.
Visibility is next to nothing. Heavy, blowing snow. A little
depressing considering the Weather Channel just said the peak of the
storm is just now approaching New York. Gonna be a long day tomorrow.

Just happened to be up for a head visit at 0545 AST this morning and the snow had just started.
Could be a long day.
I haven't bought winter tires in over 30 years but I actually called the local Toyota dealer yesterday.
Parts dept said they don't have 17" steel rims for my Highlander so I bailed
Saved myself about $ 1500.00. ;-)

We've got a skift of snow here at the moment, but the weather forecast
is calling for a few more snow showers this morning. Our grass is
barely, literally, covered. The feds have a two hour late arrival or
unscheduled leave. Wife is taking a vacation day, which is a good idea.

I don't mind a little snow: I'm glad the storm didn't nail us.

If you get this storm like we are getting, you won't be driving anywhere
anyway. All driving has been banned except for emergency vehicles, plows
and the media.

I am 10 miles north of Plymouth on the coast
and according to the news this area is getting really hammered.
Predictions still call for 24"+. Hard to tell how much has fallen
so far because the wind is blowing it everywhere. The back door to
our garage has a drift that's 3/4 of the way up the door. I opened
it to see what Sam Adams would do and he just looked at me as if to
say, "Are you ****tin' me"?

We got a guy here who drives around in a truck with a setup. He will
come and put a set of used tires on your car at work, home, track,
whereever, for about 180-200 bucks passenger tires used, balanced,
mounted and offers free rotations thereafter on those tires if you come
to the home base... He usually doesn't get AT's though so I get mine at
tiremonkey or similar and let him mount them for 20 bucks a shot...

$180-$200 *each* for used tires? If so, that seems high.

180-200 for a set of four passenger tires... generally about half way
through their usable life, some brand new(ish) too but they would be
more.. Point is in a fix you can get 4 legal tires for 200 bucks..
mounted, and balanced, and he comes to you at home, track, work, school,

I think he meant for the 4 mounted and balanced. I also remember those
tires years ago only lasted about 10,000 miles. Best deal I got on tires
was 2 weeks ago. My Toyo tires in the truck for 2+ years were recalled.
New set mounted and balanced. List was over a grand. Free to me. Back
tires were about 50% worn and fronts maybe 35%.

Meeting the price - I get that. Waiting for a dealer to do a 20 minute

the snow had just started.
Could be a long day.
I haven't bought winter tires in over 30 years but I actually called
the local Toyota dealer yesterday.
Parts dept said they don't have 17" steel rims for my Highlander so I
bailed
Saved myself about $ 1500.00. ;-)-
Who buys tires from a dealer?-

Those adverse to going on a Wal Mart shopping spree?

Although, I'll have to admit that Costco saved me about $80 total on the
four Michellins I had
installed. Damn tires are getting expensive. What happened to the good
ol' days when one could go to
the local Standard station and get used tires for $10?

Or buy gas for 21 cents a gallon.

That also reminds me.

Gosh, when I was a boy, my mom could send me down to the store with a $1 bill, and I could come back
with 5 potatoes, 2 loaves of bread, 3 bottles of milk, a hunk of cheese, and box of tea and 6 eggs.

Damn shame that those days are long gone.

Too many security cameras.

Even without the five finger discount, I remember a weeks groceries
being $20 or so. Of course we were living on $5000 a year at the time
and that was pretty much what the house we lived in cost.
BTW I looked on Zillow and that same house is $317k now

The house I grew up in was $4100 in 1942.

Now a half million.

It is amazing how we thought a house less than 1000 sq/ft was actually
livable in those days. When my wife was building, 2000 sq/ft was a
starter home, the smallest they built. They went up from there to
almost 4000 sq/ft and these were considered tract builders.

Besides liar loans, I think first time home buyer subsidized loans also
added to the housing disaster. Instead of the young, first time buyer
buying s starter used home and fishing it up and keeping the neighborhood
up, they get a subsidized loan to buy a huge new house that they can barely
afford if at all, and the older neighborhoods fall in to disrepair.
