Took the Legend out on Halifax Harbour yesterday afternoon after the weatherman promised sunshine light winds and 17 C temperature.
He lied......It was cloudy, windy and about 14 C. Started off at the Jubilee Rd launch ramp on the beautiful Northwest Arm and worked our way south out past the Hens and Chickens buoy off the tip of Point Pleasant Park..then east to the vicinity of the Pleasant buoy and finally north towards downtown. Passed two cruise ships tied up at Pier 21 and buzzed the numerous docks and piers until we were stopped in our tracks ad two naval tugs pulled HMCS Halifax out of its berth at the dockyard to re-position it. We waited a few minutes at a respectful couple hundred yards off but tired of that and circled around its stern. Once we got out past its protected lee, the wind and waves really picked up due to the north westerly winds blowing directly down the harbour. The wife asked me to turn around so I retraced our route southward and then cruised over to McNabs Island. Kicked around there for a bit, having a light lunch of a banana and a cool drink of water. I actually had to put my PFD on over a sweatshirt to keep warm for the trip back. It hasn't been that great a spring/summer this year and now I'm concerned that the fall may be early and cool. I can see why retired people like to move south...at least for the winter. |
