The local bars and taverns should rake in the bucks.
Used to be neat to see all the different uniforms flooding the downtown. Now they all seem to dress in their civilian clothes...so as not to stand out, I guess. |

Some years ago in San Diego, I asked about that, because there were dozens of navy ships around, but very few guys in uniform. Bartender told me the navy guys dressed in civilian clothes when off duty so as to avoid fights with morons trying to prove their manhood by punching a military guy. Seems possible, but I don't know. Ask Flatulent Jim what he wore on navy shore leave after he finished up his duties dispensing soap and towels and rubdowns on his ship. |

When you get military from three or four different nations,it's best they all look casual, otherwise there is team brawls. |

I would *guess* in more military friendly or dependent ports of call, they might be more outward with their affiliations. I know when they visit here in the NE they wear their Uniforms, especially in NYC, and they for the most part get treated like kings, at least from what I see. It used to be when we stopped a uniformed serviceman and bought his coffee or just said thanks, something we have tried to do since 9/11 they were caught off guard, seems as time goes on they are not as surprised by it.. Some of the old timers still are though. |
