Captain Phillips

I just finished watching "Captain Phillips" with Tom Hanks playing the
lead role as Captain Phillips. Based on the 2009 pirate attack off the
Somali coast.

I don't watch movies often so I don't qualify as much of a critic, but I
thought it was pretty good. Don't know how accurate it was but you sure
get the sense of terror that he must have experienced. Also had great
footage of the US Navy ships and the Seals that came to his rescue.

Watched it on the iMac using the Samsung portable DVD player/writer that
Harry recommended. Works great.

Hanks was on Charley Rose and he said they kept the actors who played
the pirates away from him until they shot the bridge scene and he said
they actually scared him a little the first time he saw them.
They did do a good job with the movie. I really liked the corpsman at
the end. She looked like the real deal. Reminded me of my niece's kid.
Nothing but business.

The movie seemed to follow events closely. I liked it.

We enjoyed it a bunch. Some of the crew have said it gives Phillips a lot more credit that he was
due, but the flic was good whether accurate or not.

Yeah, I was reading about some of the crew's complaints about accuracy.
They were paid $5,000 each by the film company for interviews done
while researching data but were required to sign an agreement to never
discuss any differences in the film versus their versions of the events.
Some crew members refused and I suspect they were holding out for more
money, realizing the film would probably generate a lot of money.

The differences are relatively minor, IMO given what happened.

In the film Phillips volunteers to be shot instead of a crew member.
He didn't according to crew member accounts. He also didn't
"volunteer" to join the pirates in the lifeboat. He was forced.

The biggest issue was if Phillips made the right decision by ignoring a
maritime warning to stay at least 600 miles offshore. He was 300 miles
offshore when the ship was attacked. Some crewmembers have filed suit
about this. Phillips claims that it was his judgement that they would
not have been any safer at 600 miles or 1200 miles.

I liked the part where he fakes the radio communications with military
coalition forces. That part was true. He made the call for help and
then disguised his voice to make it sound to the pirates that coalition
forces responded and air support was five minutes away. Scared off one
boat.

I watched it too and thought it was worth my time. Not saying i wanted to see it, but I'm surprised that Hollywood wouldn't let heads explode on the life boat though.
