The sad thing is until I was probably ten, when my dad took me fishing it was a tomato stake, some cotton string from the garden, and bent over brads (nails)... When I was in my early tweens, I used a Michelob Beer bottle cause of the shape and bought a new spool of 4 pound test every spring... and hand casted... |

The worst day fishing is better than the best day working. LdB When I go back.. I remember that fishing with my dad, more than most other fishing. At least, those were the trips that stand out:) He was laid off from Finast Grocery for 5 years during which time he was a maintenance at the Holmstead Museum in Ct. We used to go down to the pond and catch Bullheads and Perch with those old nails and stakes... Didn't catch a lot, but every once in a while we snagged a few. Later I got pretty good at hand fishing the lakes for Trout with my beer bottle and fresh line. I could put a worm and tiny sinker out 30-40 yards. Huge disadvantage playing fish in compared to my buds who all had Ugly Sticks and such, but it was cool... Couldn't do much at all in a stream though, just not enough touch. Eventually at about age 15 I think I got a Mitchell 301 (left handed version of a 300) and a rod. Still suck at fishing, but I do love it... |
