Looks like Mercedes is coming out with a new "cigarette" Hull boat. and with two gas-sucking mercruisers, it ought to move pretty well

"The latest AMG boat is propelled by two 9-liter V-8s sourced from Mercury Marine; combined, they produce close to a whopping 2700 horsepower.

Despite this astounding amount of power, Cigarette Racing claims the engines can run on regular pump gas, which is a good thing, since any mention of fuel consumption is conspicuously absent from the official AMG press release. Much like the price tag on the boat and the C63 Black Series itself, if you have to ask about the fuel consumption, you probably can’t afford the vehicle itself."

There are a few of these super high speed powerboats (though not as
powerful as your example) roaring around Chesapeake Bay on flat calm
summer days. Usually with no mufflers. I suppose if one's penis isn't
working, having a super ultra-high-speed, super-loud "Cigarette" style
boat that annoys everyone else enjoying the Bay is the way to go. When
they crash into another boat or flip, the news videos are interesting.

I've read about devices that open or close the mufflers on these boats
with the flip of a switch or lever. I think it is called a muffler
bypass. I wonder if the guys who do that are the richer dads of the high

"They said it was going too fast for the conditions or the capabilities of the boat."

Conditions of the water don't look bad, and the boat was probably in decent shape, if just bought,
so I'm thinking it was the conditions and capabilities of the operator that caused the spill.

I don't think the 'tuners' to which you refer are owned primarily by 'rich kids'. The 'rich kids'
drive new Mustangs, 'Vettes, Jaguars, etc. There is a certain crowd associated with 'tuners',
especially those with flame decals all over them. There are several in Rose Hill Apartments. You

That was a 'non-agitational' post. Good behavior should be rewarded. I think Pavlov said that. The
'poor child' should not be up at night reading rec.boats.

I'm glad no one was severely injured in the incident, but I'm not sad to see another Cigarette boat

Sorry, not familiar with "Rose Hill Apartments," but apparently you are,
so perhaps you will elucidate. Don't know what you mean by "tuners,"
either. But I see a lot of the cars to which I referred lined up heading
north on Route 4 in the morning, waiting to turn into the high school
parking lot. Maybe we don't have as many rich kids in our area as you
do, because I don't see many Corvettes or Jags in the lines. I do see a
number of Mustangs, though, usually being driven by the girls.

As for the guys in the boat, from reading the news article, I'd agree
with you that it appears to be a case of operator error. Were they
showing off for the chicks on the beach?

It's "agitation" to point out examples of what appears to be incompetent
boat handling? I saw the comments of one of the wives, too. She was
defending her hubby but made no comment about whether his poor judgment
was a factor in the accident. Why are you "personalizing" this?

They have to be muffled going through Kent Narrows, or they'll be ticketed.

Hope you're day is spectacular!

I've read about devices that open or close the mufflers on these boats
with the flip of a switch or lever. I think it is called a muffler
bypass. I wonder if the guys who do that are the richer dads of the high
school twerps I see (and hear) driving around the (usually) little Honda
cars with the big aftermarket tailpipes and no or unrestricted mufflers.

I'm sure there were cheers from the shoreline when this happened:

"They said it was going too fast for the conditions or the capabilities of the boat."

Conditions of the water don't look bad, and the boat was probably in decent shape, if just bought,
so I'm thinking it was the conditions and capabilities of the operator that caused the spill.

I don't think the 'tuners' to which you refer are owned primarily by 'rich kids'. The 'rich kids'
drive new Mustangs, 'Vettes, Jaguars, etc. There is a certain crowd associated with 'tuners',
especially those with flame decals all over them. There are several in Rose Hill Apartments. You

It's funny.. Here I am reading the comments on the news page and the
wife of one of the injured comes in telling how folks like our friend
above, comments have kept the poor child up at night crying while her
dad is in the hospital...

The group was great for a few days, why bother with the agitators?

That was a 'non-agitational' post. Good behavior should be rewarded. I think Pavlov said that. The
'poor child' should not be up at night reading rec.boats.

I'm glad no one was severely injured in the incident, but I'm not sad to see another Cigarette boat
off the water. They are good only for speed and noise, neither of which give me a thrill.

No, the child apparently was up at night because of the comments on the

On several occasions you've referred to the MS13 gangsters living right across the street from me.
The only source I can think of would be the Rose Hill Apartments, the big apartment complex behind
the shopping center, with which I know you're familiar. That apartment complex is heavily populated

Actually, I have referred to the MS-13 gangsters who hang out in and
around the Springfield Mall, which is a couple of miles from your house.
If by "shopping center," you are referring to the little Safeway
shopping center near your house, yes, I am familiar with it, but I am
not familiar with any apartment complexes behind it.

I appreciate the "tuner" references. I've been referring to these cars
and their drivers as boy racers, which apparently is now an obsolete
term to describe that particular car cult. A lot of the high school aged
boys around here drive such cars. The first thing they seem to modify is
the exhaust, to make the car loud. I suppose they like the attention
their exhaust systems get from the local sheriff's deputies. :)

No, the child apparently was up at night because of the comments on the

I read those comments from the wife of one of those involved in the
accident. Instead of defending her husband's apparently stupid
boathandling, perhaps she should have put her foot down and told him
that as her husband and father of their children, he had no right to be
engaging in that sort of behavior.

About 25 years ago, a friend of mine was out duckhunting on the Bay in
one of those dark green aluminum "duck boats." It was cold as a roomful
of ex-wives that day, and while I don't call the circumstances, the boat
capsized and my friend and a buddy of his drowned. At his funeral, the
comments included remarks from his close friends who wondered what the
hell a married man with small children was doing out on the Bay on a
bitter cold day hunting ducks from a small boat.

Indeed.

I'd say they look like it John. But there is probably more room there than what meets the eye. It might be a pain to pull the back cap or 'hood' off of it, but the engines are right there and at least not crammed down between the stringers on a typical V-8 I/O.

I'd think that the maintenance on them wouldn't be difficult, but probably frequent.

"The latest AMG boat is propelled by two 9-liter V-8s sourced
from Mercury Marine; combined, they produce close to a
whopping 2700 horsepower.

Despite this astounding amount of power, Cigarette Racing
claims the engines can run on regular pump gas, which is a
good thing, since any mention of fuel consumption is
conspicuously absent from the official AMG press release. Much
like the price tag on the boat and the C63 Black Series
itself, if you have to ask about the fuel consumption, you
probably can’t afford the vehicle itself."

There are a few of these super high speed powerboats (though
not as
powerful as your example) roaring around Chesapeake Bay on flat
calm
summer days. Usually with no mufflers. I suppose if one's penis

They have to be muffled going through Kent Narrows, or they'll

I've read about devices that open or close the mufflers on these

I'm sure there were cheers from the shoreline when this happened:

"They said it was going too fast for the conditions or the
capabilities of the boat."

Conditions of the water don't look bad, and the boat was probably
in decent shape, if just bought,
so I'm thinking it was the conditions and capabilities of the
operator that caused the spill.

I don't think the 'tuners' to which you refer are owned primarily

It's funny.. Here I am reading the comments on the news page and the
wife of one of the injured comes in telling how folks like our friend
above, comments have kept the poor child up at night crying while her
dad is in the hospital...

The group was great for a few days, why bother with the agitators?

That was a 'non-agitational' post. Good behavior should be rewarded.
I think Pavlov said that. The
'poor child' should not be up at night reading rec.boats.

I'm glad no one was severely injured in the incident, but I'm not
sad to see another Cigarette boat
off the water. They are good only for speed and noise, neither of
which give me a thrill.

No, the child apparently was up at night because of the comments on the
page where the story was reported locally on the news...

Well, I'm sorry the kid had to be put through that. But, that's
something parents should consider
when acting like dumb asses.

Agreed.

Imagine the horror your kids experience reading about you on the internets.

On several occasions you've referred to the MS13 gangsters living right across the street from me.

The only source I can think of would be the Rose Hill Apartments, the big apartment complex behind

the shopping center, with which I know you're familiar. That apartment complex is heavily populated

with Latinos, many of whom own 'tuner cars' or tuners.

At one time we had an ordinance to limit altering motorcycle exhaust pipes.
Seems to have gone by the wayside as some of the Harleys are reaching ear splitting levels. Since amalgamation in the mid 90's, the police are scarce in the old City of Halifax.

Some of the southern Maryland Harley riders are running without
mufflers. I don't know why the local deputies don't pull them over. They
should.

Yeah, it's why I was shocked to hear the news. Poor guy is dead, but he
should have known better. In my mind a small aluminum boat is no place
to be in when water temps are in the mid 30's. You don't last long if
you fall in. Eight degree air temp? No duck is worth that, even if I
were a hunter (which I am not).

I think his was a 29'. There were a couple of Blackfins on our dock in
Scituate and I always liked them.

I was at the dock when he splashed it after the diesel conversion and
helped him tie up in his slip. I couldn't believe how much lower it sat
in the water. Blackfins have a low freeboard at the stern even with gas
engines. The extra weight of the diesels (and new fuel tanks) really
made it squat down.

One of the boats I had that I've never posted much about was a Phoenix
SportsFish. I think it was a 28 footer, IIRC. This model Phoenix is
*very* similar to a Bert, mainly because they were designed by the same
people who developed the Bertram models.

This was a sweet, fast boat. Dual Merc 350's that were only a couple of
years old when I bought it and ran like tops. I actually bought it as
a surprise for my father-in-law hoping that he'd retire his old
Uniflite that was a floating time bomb electrically and made the whole
family nervous whenever he went out. But he didn't want the Phoenix
because unlike his Uniflite, the Phoenix did not have a lower helm station.

So, I used it for a while and then my younger son used it for two
seasons. When he went off to school I sold it to my brother who used it
for several years with virtually no problems or issues. I also had the
37' Egg Sportsfish at the time and my brother would have no problem
following me out 32 miles to our favorite cod fishing spot.

Nice boat. Handled nicely, rode nicely. Shuda kept it, dammit!

It wasn't exactly young then. I think it was a 1984 or 1985 and that
picture was probably taken in 2002 or 2003 shortly after I bought it..
Actually, the image I posted to Photobucket is a scan of a picture I have.

My brother ended up selling it about five years ago to another guy I
know. He's still using it every summer and it's still going strong.

When I bought it the engines only had a couple hundred hours on them. I
am sure the hours today are well north of 1000.

Looks just like a Bertram 31. We looked at a bunch of them back in
1999 but ended up getting a really nice Bertram 33 instead. It was a
great boat and I would have brought it with us to Florida in 2003 if
it had diesels instead of the Crusader 454s. It would have cost as
much to repower as the boat was worth and it still would not have been
suitable for long range cruising.

Very nice, Richard. But over time, it'd probably be clapped out by now..

But it looks great while it was young!

What you need is a boat that will run on a couple horsepower. Put a
treadmill in and bring a couple of the wife's pets, and let them power the
boat. Get some use out of the manure manufacturers. ;)

Yeah, if your boating is limited to local cruising and day trips, gas
power is fine up to a certain size I think. A boat like the Phoenix is
perfect for that. But, I agree, once you've had diesels, you really can
never look back.

I was trying to remember how many boats I've had as I went through
suffering from two-footitis over the years. I think the total that were
22' or larger is seven or eight. Then there were four or five open,
center console type outboards of 20' or under and a couple of small,
aluminum types. Oh .. and one 30' sailboat that I had briefly.

The first one that had twin engines with fixed props and rudders was an
old, 28' Uniflite sedan bridge. Twin Chrysler 318's. It was a reliable
tank of a boat. The first diesel powered boat was the Navigator
followed by the 37' Egg Harbor that I bought for use up north while the
Navigator was in Florida. Both of those boats were brand new, something
I'll never do again.

Favorite boats with lots of great memories are the Navigator and the 36'
Grand Banks. Two totally different types of boats and boating styles
but both were very enjoyable for their own unique reasons. Technically,
the Grand Banks was "Mrs.E's" boat ... I was just the on- call boat
captain and maintenance man. I never thought I'd enjoy the slow
cruising of the Grand Banks, but I found that I did. The last year that
we had it I used it quite a bit, making trips from the Cape up to
Scituate and back. It was a 3 hour trip (one way) in the Navigator and
about 2 hours in the Egg Harbor. In the GB it was more like 7 hours.
Unlike yours, it had the single 120 hp diesel and cruised at 7 knots,
but I discovered that there was something very calming and peaceful
about it underway. Maybe it was due to the 1.5 gal/hr fuel burn rate
that made it so relaxing. A trip from the Cape to Scituate consumed
about $40 in fuel. The same trip in the Egg, even though it only took
about two hours was closer to $200. The GB was also was a bit of a new
challenge to learn docking skills using the "back and fill" method.

Worst boat I owned was a Mainship sedan. It was also the last boat I
had. I bought it when both the Navigator and Grand Banks unexpectedly
sold within a week of each other and I found myself boatless which was
*not* the plan. I disliked it for a number of reasons and was happy to
sell it after only one boating season. The good news was that I bought
it cheap and sold it for $7k more ... although I had to replace an oil
pan on one engine that the surveyor "missed" in his survey. Here's what
it looked like. This picture was taken the day I picked it up in
Haverhill, MA and, after a nerve wracking trip down the Merrimack river,
was arriving in Scituate for a overnight stay before continuing down
to the Cape and Kingman Yacht Center:
