How is your wife taking it? She's fine. She has been prepared for it for a long time. Her mother is a different story though. Very old school, Italian culture. We were up at 2am this morning talking about him. My wife and her sister asked me to put together an obituary, so I spent some time doing that. It's amazing that you can wrap up someone's 88 years of life on this planet in about three or four sentences. Makes you realize how insignificant we all are in the bigger scheme of things. |

Sorry and relieved to hear that. Put a spark plug on top of his casket for me. ;-( Hah! That will probably be my long lasting memory of him. Standing in the engine compartment of the Uniflite with the hatch doors open, having a "thinking stick" while he replaced the old fashioned, spring loaded type voltage regulator with another, used, old fashioned, spring loaded voltage regulator that he found in his junk drawer. The funniest time he did that, he was all proud of himself because the gauge in the cabin indicated the alternator was charging. It didn't for long. I was standing in the cockpit and happened to look down at the alternator. The whole body of it was glowing red hot. Then there was the time he replaced the bronze washer in the Bennett trim tab joystick with a stainless steel washer. He had me hanging over the transom watching the trim tabs as he operated them up and down from the cabin. All seemed fine until I looked into the cabin and saw smoke pouring from behind the console. Stainless doesn't conduct electricity well. I suggested that for a few bucks we could go get a brand new, replacement joystick up at Monahans' Marine. As you recall, he didn't believe in spending bucks. Instead, after I explained it had to be bronze or copper to carry the current he drilled a hole in a penny, filed the edges to fit and installed that. It worked fine for the rest of the time he had the boat. |
