Recommendation for CL 16 Outboard Shaft Length and HP
 

Hi,

I am getting a motor for my CL 16 (an older one # 878) and was hoping you
could help me with a recommendation for the HP and shaft length. I will be
sailing in a area where I will have to motor out for a 1 KM or so before I
can sail. I am currently looking at a 15" shaft between 3 and 4 hp.



Any advice you have would be greatly appreciated.

The CL people (Tom ) recommended a 'short shaft' outboard for the CL 14
(and I would presume the CL 16).
The trick is to keep the prop out of the water when sailing. Most short
shafts are 15" to 17"

One possibility is to mount it on a spring assisted transom board that
is
suitable for your engine weight. The moveable transom will make it
easier
to get the engine out of the water, and for tilting it back. Short shaft
engines are limiting in heavier seas, as the prop will come out of the
water in big swells. Also, think about a high gear ratio engine to push
a heavy displacement hull, like most sailboats (3:1 if you can find one,
would be fine). I also would be tempted to go up a bit on the
horsepower. It doesn't hurt to have some reserve power when you need
it. I don't know the weight of a CL 16, but 3 to 4 hp. engines are
often used on dinghies.
