John, I don't know what your attending physician has in store for you,
but be VERY wary of those damn mesh fixes. I'm getting ready to lose
an employee for the second time for removal of mesh, which IMHO the
body never sees as anything other than a foreign body. This mess
includes a second major surgery and the complications of a huge
abscess.

I hope you fare better.

It is my current understanding that he is not using a mesh fix. Upon reading your post I called his
office. She couldn't say for sure, but said that whenever he is using the mesh he has another doctor
with him. In my case there is no other doctor, so she thinks he's not using the mesh.

But, given the foreign bodies in my body already, one more probably won't make much of a difference.

Best wishes to your employee.

I had one repaired without mesh. That repair lasted about a year. The
second time around he used mesh and it's held up more than 30 years. MMV

It looks like many of the mesh problems were due to the type mesh:

"Many complications related to hernia repair with surgical mesh that have been reported to the FDA
have been associated with recalled mesh products that are no longer on the market. Pain, infection,
recurrence, adhesion, obstruction, and perforation are the most common complications associated with
recalled mesh. In the FDA’s analysis of medical adverse event reports to the FDA, recalled mesh
products were the main cause of bowel perforation and obstruction complications."

Nowadays, about 90% of the repairs use mesh:

"Hernias have a high rate of recurrence, and surgeons often use surgical mesh to strengthen the
hernia repair and reduce the rate of recurrence. Since the 1980s, there has been an increase in
mesh-based hernia repairs—by 2000, non-mesh repairs represented less than 10% of groin hernia repair
techniques."

We'll see. I had a repair on the other side in 1977, it's held up all this time. Of course, I don't
swing at trees with my golf clubs!

You doing the mesh via a couple holes in your belly?

It isn't horrible and you are up and around pretty fast. I did it
without the vicodin and I really only had one bad day.

Your balls will get about the size and color of a pomegranate for a
week or two but it doesn't hurt and it goes away.

No, this is in my groin and will be done with an incision. It's not the laparoscopic surgery but the
open repair.

Please describe 'stupis'.

Also, I made a firm offer to be sociable with you in exchange for the same treatment. I've not
received a response from you to that offer.

----------------------------

I remember my hernia repair vividly. It was done by the same surgeon
who had performed a mastectomy on my wife, so I knew him pretty well.
He was joking around with me before they administered the anesthesia.

The problem is that I don't accept anesthesia very well. I fight it.
Always have, even with oral surgery. The docs think I am out but I am
not.

Anyway, he thought I was out and started making the incision. I was
groggy, but still very much awake. I lifted my head a little and
said, "HEY" !
Scared the bananas out of him. He said, "You can feel that?" I
said, "Damn right I can". He told the anesthesiologist to "hit him"
and that's the last I remember of it.

He came by later in the recovery area and apologized. He told me that
all the monitors indicated I was out like a light when he started.
Told him "no sweat" ... it really didn't hurt, but I didn't want him
to get too carried away until I was really out. He said it took
quite a bit to put me under.

Never had that experience. Did come about half-way awake during a colonoscopy. Remember groaning and
seeing a TV, but that was only for a few seconds.

Doesn't sound very enjoyable!
