IS there any way to filter out all of the threads on this blog that deal with politics biased opinions and general trash.
I joined this blog because I am interested in learning about small boat building and seamanship. I' sure there is a lot of good information, but I really don't have the time to sort thru all of the junk.
Is there some kind of thrash blocking program I can use to help make this a better place to spend my time? Jrags

You can use your filters. If you want to learn about building, try
rec.boats. building... Or me:)

You can get rid of more than half of it by filtering Harry Krause,
currently posting as FOAD and who knows what else.

------------------------

Unfortunately you are out of luck.

"rec.boats" isn't a "blog". It's one of the original internet
usenet newsgroups that started in the late 1970s. Rec.boats was
officially named in the 1980s making it one of the oldest newsgroups
and one of the few without a charter. It was not available for
viewing via the "web" as it is today and for many years was a source
of boating experience, knowledge and camaraderie among it's
participants.

This generally lasted until the late 1990s when the focus on boating
and good will began to erode, giving way to more of a debate forum
for political, religious and personal agenda interests that rarely
have anything to do with boats. There are many reasons for the
decline of it's usefulness and quality. The original, somewhat
restricted access to newsgroups have given way to many web based
forums that simply re-publish the rec.boats's content which increased
the number of people who could monitor and post to the group.
"Google Groups" is a good example. "Boatbanter.com" (apparently
where you are posting from) is another example. Unfortunately,
with the added ease of access came even more people not really
interested in boats, but in debating, name calling and spreading
ill-will.

There's even one long time poster to rec.boats who has made it
abundantly clear for the past few years that his only purpose in
posting to rec.boats is to see it's final demise.

There are a few remaining people who are serious boaters and share
their experiences and expertise. There have been a few feeble
attempts to restore the newsgroup back to it's former glory, but for
the most part "rec.boats" has become nothing more than a venting
outlet of animosity, political division and general BS.

I don't know of a way to filter posts by subject. Many newsgroup
readers will allow filtering by name or email address. I am not sure
about the web based forums like Google Groups or Boatbanter because
I don't use them.

A good start would be to filter Harry, Don, Kevin, and Scotty. That would wipe out 90% of the
name-calling and ****-slinging.

Then, tell us about your boat.

This is not a blog, this is a USENET newsgroup. The web site "www.boatbanter.com", from
whence you come, chooses to suck up the USENET rec.boats newsgroup into their site to make it
look like they have more "action" than they acutally do. If you want to implement a filter
then you should stop using www.boatbanter.com.

Attempting to treat you like a normal, sociable human being is a waste of time, isn't it? You just

As to the friendly Biafra comment...you must look at mostly overweight people. For a medium-framed
man who is 6'3" tall, I'm actually about 6lbs overweight. I'll have to work on that.

It was that. I came to the group in the mid 90s as a mostly sailboat

People who come here with reasonable questions and attitudes still get
reasonable answers for the most part, but the talent pool is greatly
diminished. That's as much the fault of web based forums for the most
part, which many people seem to prefer for various reasons. It does
tend to fragment the knowledge base however.
