Hobie Getaway vs. Hobie 16 -- performance

How does the Hobie Getaway perform compared to the old 16? The 16 has quite a
bit more sail, but the Getaway's new hull design might be more efficient. Or is
it? Does the Getaway go upwind better? Downwind? Does it bury the lee hull
and pitchpole like the 16? Has anyone sailed both enough to make a good
comparison?

Matt,
I've never sailed the Getaway, but have heard nothing but praise about it.
It's more of a cruising cat, not a racer. The hulls have almost double the
volume of the H16, so you can carry more people or gear. The problem of
pitch-poleing is almost eliminated. I doubt if it would sail any faster or
point higher than the H16, but if you aren't into racing, it's probably not
noticeable. Plus, the main factor for buying one is the built in coolers!
I've talked Connie Ketterman, who helped with the original design and
testing of the boat, and she's very proud of the product.

I have sailed both and the 16 is a bit faster. However I have been sailing
the getaway for the past 2-3 years in Pamlico Sound and it is fantastic,
especially for a group. Kids on the front tramp really get hooked, the
full batten main is excellent as well as the roller furling jib. I have
soloed them up to something less then 20 kts with no problems. Very
controllable.

Good luck!
