Virginia Republicans can't help themselves

Wed Sep 18, 2013 8:35 AM EDT

Jon Chait joked yesterday, "The Virginia gubernatorial ticket has
managed to offend blacks, gays, women, immigrants.... Somehow they have
neglected the Jews."

That neglect promptly ended an event yesterday for Virginia
gubernatorial hopeful Ken Cuccinelli (R).

As the Washington Post reported, the far-right state attorney general
was "forced to distance himself from a local Republican official who
spoke ahead of the candidate and told an anti-Semitic joke."

People brought yellow lawn chairs with the motto "Don't tread on
me," and at least one tricorner hat was visible in the crowd. John
Whitbeck, 10th Congressional District Republican Committee chairman,
raised eyebrows when he kicked off the festivities by telling a joke in
which the head of the Jewish religion presented the pope with a long,
elaborate document that the Jewish leader said was a bill for the last
supper.

The crowd laughed uproariously. But American Bridge 21st Century, a
liberal political action committee, tweeted about Whitbeck's
"anti-Semitic" opener and the state Democratic Party later circulated a
video of the joke.

Chait added, "It's a great piece of humor because it combines the
Jews-are-cheap angle with the Jews-killed-Jesus angle in one joke."

One look at the Virginia Repugnants in here and nothing would surprise me.
They seem to thrive on "unsociable" behaviour.

Since Jesus was a Jew I am not sure where the offense was. He was
probably pretty dark to, in spite of all of those European depictions
of the blonde white guy.

That would be the ALLEGED Jesus.

So, Gregg, do you think "Jewish people" are good businesspeople because
there is something inherent in the Jewish religion that genetically
encodes them to be that way, even though religion is cultural?

My liberal arts education taught me that in many parts of Europe for
hundreds of years Jews for the most part were not allowed to own real
property or go into the learned professions because of rampant
anti-Semitism and, as a result, lots of Jews became shopkeepers and
various other kinds of businessmen and women and artists. In this
country, for the longest time, Jews were for the most part were not
allowed to into the professions or into the upper levels of blue chip
corporations or into country clubs or into many of the most prestigious
universities.

In the late 1940's, Laura Hobson wrote a novel that was made into a
movie starring Gregory Peck..."Gentleman's Agreement." It tells the
story of anti-Semitism in this country and how Jews were kept out of
many businesses and social organizations.

If you understood any of this, perhaps you might understand why your
characterization might be considered a slur, the same sort of slur that
says black people have "rhythm."

I remember a sociology class in college (one of those many liberal art
courses) in which a fellow student said that if Jews hated Christians
the way Christians hated Jews, Doctors Salk and Sabin would have figured
out a way to withhold their anti-polio vaccine from Gentiles. But, of
course, Salk and Sabin didn't do that. Good businessman that Salk was
(Jewish, you know), he didn't patent his vaccine.

Gotta love rec.boats.

Yes, well, I was discussing a period in the United States in the 1950s
and early 1960s, when there was plenty of overt discrimination against
Jews in the United States. Your boy Nixon was a raving anti-Semite. And
those Christian Southern Strategy Republicans? Ever hear a meeting of
them talking about blacks and Jews? I have.

And there is plenty of historical data indicating Christian hatred of
Jews in this country and, of course, in Europe throughout the centuries.
Ruth Bader Ginsberg has spoken publicly about the antisemitism she
faced, as has Bernard Marcus, one of the founders of Home Depot.

I agree JFKs only real claim to fame was being shot and the other two
were criminals.
We always hear how popular he was but he was on his way to losing the
64 election. That is why he was in Dallas in the first place, trying

All religions are "far-fetched" fairytales. I don't mention Jews, Sikhs,
Hindus, et cetera, very often because they don't seem very interested in
turning my country into a theocracy. If the Christians would just keep
their fairytales to themselves, and not try to shove their religion and
their strange beliefs down everyones' throats, I wouldn't pay any
attention to them, either. It makes no difference to me whether someone
worships a pet rock, the sun, or any other deity-like figure or
imaginary being.

I grew up in a city and at a time when everyone loved the Jewish kids
because there were so many Jews in New Haven, the public schools closed
down on the Jewish High Holidays. The two biggest
cultural/religious/educational/political groups at that time in my
hometown were Jews and Roman Catholics. Easy to figure out why: the city
was a magnet for European immigrants in the late 19th and first half of
the 20th Century because of its industrial economy.

Regardless, it is still a repugnant stereotype.

Funny how that Harry is so adamant about Christianity being just another
far-fetched fairy tale (to which I agree about it being) but doesn't
seem to say the same about Judaism.

I do think Harry is a bit disingenuous when you see the hateful things
he characterizes all christians as being and then gets offended when
someone implies jews are good businessmen.

I don't characterize "all" Christians as being anything, other than,
like believers in other religions, believers in superstition.

More so and pretty inaccurate.

Perhaps it is the idea that you can give up your beliefs and adopt

There is nothing more fun that a good old Jewish wedding. (bear in

You may be a goy, the singular, and part of the "tribe" of goyim, the
plural, but you were never a golem, which is a Yiddish term for an
artificial human form brought to life by supernatural means.

The public schools in my home town closed on the Jewish high holidays.
Everyone knew some Yiddism.

Do they get news in that bubble you live in.

"Hymietown" (Jackson)
"the diamond merchants in Crown Heights," (Sharpton)
"Them Jews aren?t going to let him talk to me." (Wright)

there! (the kid giving thanks to those who came, etc.)

Actually, the few times Jehovah's Witnesses have come to the door,
they've been kindly, elderly black ladies and I'm always happy to say
hello, even though I have no interest in what they are selling.

What I am referring to are the attempts of "the religious" to
legislative or otherwise mandate their superstitious beliefs and "rules"
on society as a whole and on the many individuals who do not believe as
they do.
