Your guess would be wrong. When there are witnesses, they typically testify. On that crowded street in your old home town, there were witnesses. According to the news reports, they told wildly varying stories about what happened.

5. I have no knowledge of whether the witnesses were liberal,
conservative, or, most likely, apolitical, and, of course, neither do you.

Until it began to go whack-o in the 1980s, the Republican Party was
reasonably successful in Connecticut and elsewhere in New England, and
even in New York State. When I was in high school and my mother was a
minor functionary in the city GOP, I actually was a volunteer worker for
the re-election of a Republican congressman, and spent a number of
Saturdays in GOTV activities. Of course, he wasn't a latter-day
Republican whack-o.
