actual boating!
Took the neighbor kid and his buddy shark fishing in SF Bay Wednesday.
Couple drifts for halibut with no lusk, but main part of the trip was shark and ray fishing. They both landed a couple rays, none very big. Largest 14#. A lot of Smoothound sharks and one 3' leopard shark. Leopard shark in McCovey Cove by AT&T Park. The Americas Cup boats were practicing off SF, but the bay was sloppy, so did not go watch. Did have the Oracle boat come by being towed back to the docks. Should have taken them salmon fishing. Ocean was calmer, and the salmon have finally come in off Pillar Point. |

I've heard, but never verified, that the wing meat is sometimes cut in circles and fixed like scallops. John (Gun Nut) H. -- Hope you're having a great day! |

When I was 16 I caught an 80# Bat Ray and my dad kept a small part of the wing, when we gave it to an Hispanic friend with a bunch of kids. It did taste somewhat like scallops. Was not bad. Tried a skate one time, but not worth the effort, as little meat in skate wings. |

Maybe I'll keep the next one, if I give it another shot. John (Gun Nut) H. -- Hope you're having a great day! |

Think we used to get that up on the coast of Maine when I was a little guy... Could have been something else though. |

John (Gun Nut) H. I have had sting ray a few times. It is a lot like shark. I am not sure how much breading and ketchup it would take to trick you into thinking it was a bad scollop. I think like shark, it may be the variety of ray. Some shark can never be made edible, while others are very good. Blue Shark can not be made edible. Too much ammonia in the flesh. Urinates via the skin. While Mako and Thresher are sold commercially for food. |
