I have a favor to ask. My fiancée loves to sail, she doesn't have a ton of
experience, but she really enjoys it. I have been sailing since I was a
young kid, and have quite a bit of experience.

We're both nice, friendly people. I wanted to take her sailing this
weekend, Dec 13 or 14th, as part of her birthday celebration.
Unfortunately, I'm unemployed right now (Interview Tuesday!), and, after
checking prices on charters, I simply can't afford it.

So, here's the question, is anyone sailing out of Dana Point, Newport, or
Long Beach that would like an extra set of hands on board this weekend.
We're good company, and I can promise a really, really good lunch and some
nice beer for anyone who wouldn't mind us tagging along. Again, also I'm a
pretty experienced sailor, so I can definitely be put to work.

If it were Sat, we'd need to be aback by 4 or so, so a morning sail would
work best. Sunday we've got all day.

Thanks,
Geoff Jennings

You might want to try calling some of the local marinas. Occasionally,
there's a charter going, and they could take a couple of extra people.
I'll be down that way the following week, but I'm not sailing, just doing
the relatives thing.

Any man who is unemployed and cannot even afford a
sailing excursion for his fiancée will likely make one
sorry husband. Do your fiancée a favor and get a job.

Stop mooching and stop being so irresponsible. You sound
like a loser to me.

Geoff,

You should go down to the local Yacht Clubs and look into crewing on
someone else's boat for races. There are always a few boats that need
additional crew for racing. It might be tough at first but once you
get in with the right group and boat it could really work out well-
and they sail every week. I did that for a while before I bought my
boat to learn the ropes- so to speak. Where in So. Cal do you live?

Good Luck!

No he shouldn't. The man needs to spend every waking
hour getting a job. He should get even a crummy job
while he is looking for something he prefers more.

There is NO excuse to be engaged and to be a lazy
bum more concerned with leisure time activities than
being a responsible productive human being.

Tis the season to work retail... I've been looking for work since
June, apparently my career changed while I wasn't looking and now I
need to have an Engineering background writing C++ code, and also
Marketing qualifications... I now need a bachelor's degree in things
that didn't even exist when I was in school, in order to do the job I
used to have before they shut the company down.
They won't hire me at the carwash because I don't speak Spanish and
they say I won't stick around, that I'll leave as soon as a better
jobs shows up - so lack committment to their enterprise. Same thing
with the gardening. I've worked landscaping and gardening before, but
now it's no habla Espanol and no committment. The local McDonalds
says that I'm overqualified, the wrong demographic, and won't stick
around, (I think it's because I'm too middle-aged), and since I've
never worked Retail they don't trust me behind the cash-register at
Macy's. Well it's not so much the lack of experience as that more
17-20 year olds have much more retail experience and are the preferred
employees.
I think boats are neat but the guys running the training school at the
Harbor want me to pay for lessons first before I crew any of their
boats, and can't I just come up with the $1800 for a lesson-plan and
$1295 per year club-membership? I could have if I had a job. Besides
business is slow and they don't have any job-openings either.

$1295 per year membership fee's???????

Do they have any members at all?

The two clubs that I belong to, The Blue Water Club and the Hervey Bay Boat
Club, both cost less than $30 per year membership each.
I also store my boat at the Blue Water Club for the extra amount of $100 per
year.

But that is in Australia, not the USA.

I don't know how many, they have but that's for the low-level
membership plus all the benefits like free unlimited day use of
Santana 22s, reciprocal rates, etc... It's $1695 and $2195 for higher
grades, bigger boats.

Ah, you're a lucky man. But also in Queenland & I reckon that the pokey
machines more than help offset the cost of membership :-) Also doubt
that you'd be able to get in the door of the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron
for $11 Aus :-) I used to live in NSW (Gordon just north of Sydney) and
miss the sailing there very much...

Keith is in the San Fransico Bay area (so maybe a little off topic for
this Southern California tread, but what the heck -- anything to help
get someone out sailing :-) and I think referring to the Spinnaker
Sailing School & Club (see: http://www.spinnakersailing.com/). SS have
a good reputation for sail training on the bay, but are indeed quite
pricey.

Sequoia Yacht Club shares the same parking lot as SS Redwood City, but
are an all volunteer club with lots of good folks. Rates (for this
area) are quite reasonable, http://www.sequoiayc.org/membership.html,
and there always seems to be room for an extra pair of hands (member or
not) if you're courteous, keen to learn, and willing to put in a little
volunteer work along the way.

Disclaimer: my son is a Youth Member ($25 US per year) -- I'm not a
member of SYC (can't afford it right now as I'm out of work too) but
very familiar with the club and spend volunteer time there during
youth/school sailing regattas.

Note to Keith: Drop by SYC tomorrow/Saturday morning around 8:30 or 9:00
(w/foul weather gear in your trunk/boot) and you might just get lucky --
could be that someone needs an extra hand for the Redwood Cup races
going on there tomorrow. Even if you don't get lucky, or have no
sailing experience at all, you should be able to find someone talk to --
just be aware that it might get hectic in the morning due to the races.

If you have a child (8-18) that wants to learn to sail, bring him/her
along and go back west from the club to the next light, hook a right and
go to the public launch facility at the end of Chesapeake Drive (Use
1299 Chesapeake Dr, Redwood City as the destination address for MapQuest
directions http://www.mapquest.com/directions/). Youth sailing starts at
8:30 & high school sailers start training at 10:00. Youth sailing (8 to
high school) ask for Phil, high school sailing (grade 8-12) as for Eric.

Either way -- pop around either of those two places and I'm sure that
someone can get you (or your child if you have one) sailing eventually
for far less than you'd think. Like Garry Beattie (lucky guy) referred
to, there are lots of less expensive ways to get out on the water, plus
most sailors really are good folks & willing to help if you are sincere
about wanting to sail or learn to sail.

P.S. Good luck to Geoff as well -- I hope that you can find someone to
take you and your gal out in SC!

Perhaps that price is not too bad at all considering.

It's a long shot for you guys, but the same applies here in beautiful,
sunny, Queensland, Australia.

If any of you guys find yourselves in our neck of the woods you are always
welcome to join us on our boat for a sail.
Depending on the weather conditions, we usually either go along the coast,
across to Fraser Island, the worlds biggest sand island, or visit Lady
Musgrave Island on the Great Barrier Reef.

We will also welcome you to one of our traditional Aussie BBQ's. No shrimp,
just good ol Rump Steak!! I know you guys in the USA don't get rump steak,

Correction - Redwood Cup races are Sunday Dec 14th. However there still
should be plenty of folks around SYC on Saturday as well.

Youth sailing Saturday 8:30 to 11:30. High school sailing Sat & Sun
10:00 to 4:00.

Note to Geoff: sorry for intruding on your thread -- I just spotted a
local potential NorCal sailor & hoped to provide some help :-)

You appear to be located in Newport.

You might check over at NHYC -- they have the Anteater high school
regatta going on this weekend (http://www.nhyc.org/) and just might need
some extra volunteer hands. Unfortunately they hold the Anteater in the
harbor so it may not get you out of the harbor and only out in an
inflatable, but it might be good fun anyway, and provide an opportunity
meet up with folks there for alternate opportunities. Besides, your gal
just might enjoy watching the kids compete in FJ's instead of bobing
around on a big boat anyway. And, if that get's you going -- be sure to
check out the Rose Bowl regatta Jan 3-4 at Alamitos Bay Yacht Club.

Happy Holidays

I don't know how many, they have but that's for the low-level
membership plus all the benefits like free unlimited day use of
Santana 22s, reciprocal rates, etc... It's $1695 and $2195 for higher
grades, bigger boats.
It's not considered an everyman's sport around.

Well that may put a different perspective on it.
They have club yachts which you can use any time you like, provided it is
during the day, for no extra charge?

Perhaps that price is not too bad at all considering.

Garry

The price of entry keeps out the riff-raff?

Any man who is unemployed and cannot even afford a
sailing excursion for his fiancée will likely make one
sorry husband. Do your fiancée a favor and get a job.

Stop mooching and stop being so irresponsible. You sound
like a loser to me.

You're obviously a troll,so I can't believe I'm responding, but which part
of "interview Tuesday" in my original post did you fail to comprehend? Is
wanting something nice for my fiancée so bad.

And WTF are you to tell me I'm being irresponsible. Using my growing thin
_SAVINGS_ to pay for a sailboat trip would clearly be irresponsible,

looking
for another way to do it hardly is.

I hope you're a troll, if not, you must be a very bitter, sad individual.

Thanks for those recomendations! And also, good luck Geoff!

Ok, this Simpleton or Simple Simon or whatever is a cloth-eared git. Killfile it (him, her,
whatever). Do not give it food to regurgitate (i.e. "Don't feed the trolls").

I killfiled it on the second comment be cause out of all the posts on this group, it has never
added ANY knowledge, just crap. If the rest of you will killfile it, then nobody has to read
the remarks it makes.

I do respect the rest of the folks here but, by replying to this sanctimonious, ill-bred,
genetically-inferiour, pin-headed slice of trailer trash, I still get to see all the assinine,
moronic comments that this brain-dead sack of monkey-pooh has to offer.

Enough of being Mister Nice-Guy, next time, I'll say how I really feel ;-)

While you may not agree with his opinions - indeed, I know of no one that agrees
with much of his drivel - he has contributed far more to these groups than you
have.

Ha!!

Well that is interesting.

When I have been to the USA no one had ever heard of Rump steak.
One butcher I talked to knew what it was and said that they didn't have that
cut of meat in the USA because they cut the beef up differently. You end up
with a rump roast.

I don't know that your rump would be better than ours as we are very famous
for our beef, but I will admit your BBQ ribs are excellent. (Unfortunately
we can not get them over here for the same reason explained above.)

By the way, it's not Awstralia. That's the way the pommies pronounce it.
It's Australia, or Ozzie to us locals!!

Best regards

Well, you do have a point there Jeff. I'll stick to lurking in the winter and sailing the rest
of the time.

I guess I don't put in too much because most of the questions asked seem to be answered quite
quickly and correctly. There doesn't seem to be much sense in repeating the fine advice put
forth by others.

Anyhow, have good holiday season
