I do. I also remember that the french fries were cut on the premises
from real potatoes by a special slicer. Today, the fries are a "factory"
product that do not taste nearly as good. And back in the day, the meat
was meat, without ammonia.

In the northeast at around the same time there was an up and coming
small chain called Carrol's. A friend's dad was a distributor for them.
He started out because he was a potato broker and supplied them with
potatoes for fries. Every once in awhile he'd let us go for the day
delivering to the places, and we most of the managers would give us what
we wanted. Two 12 year old kids who had tons of energy could sure pack
away a lot of food!

Yep. Those were the days, old friend. And you were 6'4 1/2" tall. Oh my,
how things have changed.

Yup I remember when they opened the first McDonalds near me, across
the DC line (Southern Avenue) in Maryland.

The main reason they use "factory" french fries is that they are pre
cooked a little. To make decent fries, you really need to cook them
twice.
I think the reason fries don't taste as good is they don't cook them
in animal fat anymore.
Fries are the highest profit margin item in fast food, better than
coffee or soft drinks.

When I worked at Swift they were a vendor for McDonalds. Those 1.7 oz
burgers were real beef (no pink slime).

Did you ever get to the Little Tavern in DC? They had 10 cent burgers
and I think they were a lot better than McD. (similar to White Castle
for you mid west folks)

I vaguely recall getting burgers in the early 1970s from a little place
right off of M Street in Georgetown that I think was a Little Tavern.

It was old school fast food, nothing but a grille and a counter in a
little green roof building.
There was one next to the cut through in the 1700 block of Pa ave to G
street. I went by there every morning on my way to school and I
usually grabbed a burger or two.

There's a place in New Haven that's like that. Been there for
generations, more than 100 years, actually, called Louis Lunch.

I am sort of fond of Crystals in Florida, tiny but tasty burgers.

That is a lot nicer than a Little Tavern. They were all white and
green tile with a counter and not much else in a couple hundred square
foot nook of a building.,

I eat a Whopper at BK occasionally but that is usually the only fast
food I will eat.
All Burger Kings are not created equally tho. For some reason, some
make a better whopper than others.
I also have a pretty good eye for spotting the "dirty" ones. I spent a
lot of time behind those counters and some I would not even drink the
coffee from.
We had one particular Wendy's here we called the roach motel. I
wouldn't even let the guys bring used parts from there into the
office. I told them " Leave the old part in the dumpster and I will
fix the paperwork for the return".

I don't like the burger joints much. Around here, decent hot "fast" food
and freshly packed sandwiches, salads and fruit are available from a
chain operation called WaWa. Big, clean, well-lit stores with lots of
employees, good gasoline prices, nice food. They're putting local 7-11's
out of business. I saw a poster in a store recently that indicated the
chain was planning to open several stores in central Florida.

The problem with Little Tavern and Krispy Kreme is that they were on the way home from G'town
and Old Towne Alex.

When traveling by car alone, I can hit one, fill up with gas, go in and
take a ****, get a hot dog for a dollar and get back on the road in a
matter of minutes. From the old days of long haul trucking, it's the
stopping that kills your mileage.

Down here Publix is giving the shop and rob businesses a real run for
the money. You can get in and out pretty fast, the milk is fresher and
they have a full deli where you can get a fresh sandwich and drink for
less than the gas station places.
The places with tiered gas prices usually give you the cash price for
a debit transaction.
I am not really "on the road" that much anyway. If I am going very far
(anywhere out of Florida) I fly

The places where we vacation are far more likely to have a mom and pop

Yeah, the grocery stores up here are still all about keeping you walking
around as long as possible. I have seen one on the far side of the state
that advertized bread, milk, ice etc... "all at front of store" but none
around here.. Grocery stores around here put the dairy at the furthest
point from the door, and the deli/bread, exactly opposite in the other
rear corner... A chain called Price Chopper is the worst, Isles are more
like moving around on a chess board, you just can't go from one side of
the store to the other or front to back without several turns and
detours, not even across the back or front of the store...

Didn't know they had that anymore, they sure don't around here. Never
checked when traveling. For business my threshold whether to fly or
drive is if I can drive it in five hours or less. Can't hardly fly
ANYWHERE in less time than that.

Some of the mom and pops have fantastic food, some have mediocre and
some are roach infested pig pens.

I refuse to use self checkout and urge others not to do so, too. If the
cashiered checkout lines are too long, I bitch to the store manager, who
calls people to the front to cashier.

All self checkout does is eliminate jobs. Screw the corporationists.

usually grabbed a burger or two.

There's a place in New Haven that's like that. Been there for
generations, more than 100 years, actually, called Louis Lunch.

http://www.louislunch.com/

That is a lot nicer than a Little Tavern. They were all white and
green tile with a counter and not much else in a couple hundred square
foot nook of a building.,

I am sort of fond of Crystals in Florida, tiny but tasty burgers.

Around here, decent hot "fast"
food
and freshly packed sandwiches, salads and fruit are available from a
chain operation called WaWa. Big, clean, well-lit stores with lots of
employees, good gasoline prices, nice food. They're putting local
7-11's
out of business. I saw a poster in a store recently that indicated the
chain was planning to open several stores in central Florida.

Around these parts, we have Quick Trip, or QT for short. Same concept,
nice clean well lit stores. They all do a huge business!

Since they installed "pay at the pump" for gas, I go into one of those
"shop and rob" places less than once a year.
The last time was looking for "Mexican Coke" several years ago but
they have that everywhere now (Publix, Costco etc)

We go in all the time. Good friends with the owner, milk and bread is
the same price as parking a mile away, walking into a Stop and Shop
designed only to was as much time as possible as you work your way to
the very furthest corner to get a gallon of milk, then stand there
waiting for some idiot to make the self checkout work.... Gatoraide is 2
for 3 dollars, we grab at least two a day when we get our gas. Not to
mention, gas is cheaper if you go in and pay cash....

I refuse to use self checkout and urge others not to do so, too. If the
cashiered checkout lines are too long, I bitch to the store manager, who
calls people to the front to cashier.

All self checkout does is eliminate jobs. Screw the corporationists.

Not all that it does, it saves you money.

There's no evidence of that. I don't buy the argument that "prices would
be higher" without self-checkout.

Who do you think pays the checkout person's wages? The consumer does.

I am with you on that... What it does around here is take five self
registers in place of five regular registers, and eliminates four of the
cashiers leaving one to go from self serve to self serve cause each and
every order seems to need some kind of cashier interaction....

If I remember right, the first ones had 10 cent burgers, but maybe 15
cents. We lived way out in the sticks, but one the rare, probably every
couple of months we ventured to Rochester, my uncle would let us three
country boys eat as many as we wanted!! At 120 pounds I could put 10 or
so down easily!

The only place I see self checkout here is Home Depot/Lowes and
sometimes it is just faster to go to self checkout.

Most grocery stores here have them and they are almost always faster.

I think Caroll's in N Syracuse (actually Mattydale) offered a burger,
fries, and an "extra thick shake" for something like 29 or 39 cents.
Of course in those days you could get a decent restaurant meal for 2
or 3 dollars, and a really good dinner for $6 or $7. Were you east or
west of Rochester? I was east along the Oswego canal and did all of
my early boating on Lake Ontario.

55 south of Rochester, a real hillbilly!! The nearest grocery store
outside of a Red and White that had basics was 10 miles away, in Bath,
NY. We had Lake Keuka, and would venture to other Finger Lakes.
