"...When I got there the river was flowing over the top of the levee.
My neighbor was trying to build up the levee where he could.

He could not take the cat out on to the levee though. It was coming
over both sides of this spot about 1 to 1 ½ feet.

They got there with sand bags to stop it at that time. Last night a
levee at the other in of West Alton was topped and flooded out hwy
367.

They had to block off the way out of town in that direction to try and
keep it from flooding the town. They told everyone in town to get out
now.

If the levee holds and the rain we have coming does not cause it to
over flow or break, my house might be ok this time again...."

This isn't cool at all!

I'd be real nervous if I was him...I'd probably have my boat sitting free on it's trailer, ready to go at a moment's notice.
Or on the other hand.. have a couple weeks clothes, food & water packed in the utility trailer for a quick dash to higher ground.
Hope you stay safe & dry on your estate, Tim.

We have far too many people living in former river bottom land, behind
levees. The same is true of beach front property.

FEMA is currently reevaluating how they write these flood policies and
the insurance premium costs may be forcing these people to either
elevate or move.
Here is a video about this new policy.

Yep, that's all true. Flatland rivers change course! Hell, look at maps
from before and after the New Madrid earthquake. It actually made the
Mississippi run the other direction for awhile!

I re-read "Life on the Mississippi" recently and got a lot more out of
it then I'd remembered from childhood.
