When I worked in West Virginia, many of the locals referred to it
derisively as "West, by god, Virginia." I thought many of the people I
met and befriended were fine folks, but the sorts of social and
environmental problems in that state back then were just staggering.
In the short time I was there for The Associated Press, I got to cover
the Farmington mine disaster, the collapse of a major bridge, and many
news stories involving really serious air and water pollution.

There are many rivers and creeks in West Virginia.

And his comment about the Senator "preaching" to the shipping industry
is stupid, as West Virginia has quite an extensive "shipping industry".

Have owned boats for many, many years, the last one a 37' sloop for 18
years. Sadly, we lost her in a hard grounding last summer so now we
don't own a boat. You can find an account of the disaster in the
February issue of Messing About in Boats. All hail insurance!

Yes, I know there are rivers and ponds and maybe even lakes in West
Virginia. But there is a whole different set of rules and regulations
for inland and offshore shipping.
