St Barth's Airport - rated third most dangerous in the world

From our anchorage we can see planes coming in on final approach at
what looks to be a fairly steep ange of descent over a hill top.
Yesterday we went out to the airport to rent a car for the day and I
couldn't believe just how difficult an approach it is. Planes always
land into the east against the prevailing trade winds. The western
end of the runway, where they first touch down, is at the bottom of a
steep hill. At the top of the hill is a small traffic circle with a
large cross over to the side of the road which marks the spot of a
crash in 2001.

Better to come here by boat I think.

I freaking love Twin Otters! Excellent jump aircraft. My favorite is the Caribou, you and 50
of your friedns to 12,500 feet in about 25 minutes. We used to Bou's when we were attempting
the Virginia state record skydive about 20 odd years ago. We only got 85 out of 100 when one
of the Bou's popped a jug.

Flew in one in Vietnam. Not crazy enough to jump out of it. If I recall correctly, it had Army
pilots until the Air Force managed to take it away. A lot friendlier airplane to fly in than the
C-130 which was all noise and vibration.

Most likely you know of which I speak.

I try to sneak in a boating post once in awhile just to see if anyone
is paying attention. We've been anchored in a beautiful little cove
on St Barth's for the last week, soaking up the local scenery and
making some side trips. Yesterday we rented a car and drove all
around the island. It's a drop dead gorgeous place, highly
recommended.

Here's a photo from yesterday taken from the north end of St Barth's
over looking the anchorage at Anse de Colombier with the island of St
Martin off in the distance.

================================

I had some really nice grilled Mahi Mahi for lunch yesterday, some of
the best I've eaten recently. We caught one on our way south through
the Bahamas but most of the time it was too windy and rough for
fishing unfortunately. The trade winds have been relentless this
year.

It's a lot more fun to come down here and catch them yourself. A big
one like this will give you a real work out:
