Marine Electronics and othe equipment in Koper, Slovenia
 

Dear alt.sailing group:
I am about to purchase a Bavaria sailing yacht for med. sailing. I plan to
get it transported to Koper in Slovenia for rigging. I need to fit some
electronics (Raymarine ST 6001 autopilot) and some other equipment. Do you
know any dealer of marine equipment in the area, preferably with E-mail
address?

Raymarine list NAUTIC SERVICE as dealer in this area, but unfortunatly only
fax and telephone # is listed. Will try them later.

Is it generally a good idea to fit the youcht in Slovenia, or should I buy
the equipment at home (Norway) import the electronics and other equipment?
Another option is to buy the equipment in Germany or UK and import it to
Slovenia. What would you suggest?

I know little about Koper other than calling in there once when cruising but
I just want to say how satisfied I am keeping my yacht in Italy just across
the water in Aprilia Marittima where there is a marina of more than 2'000
boats ( http://www.netanday.it/aprilia/ ). Consequently, the support
infrastructure is excellent with many competent craftspeople, many of them
German who have relocated there. Perhaps you are only using Koper to launch,
fit out and move on, in which case you could still use the facilities in
Italy, which are infinitely better than either Slovenia or Croatia.

yes, probably. But infinitely more expensive!!!
Furthermore, I don't know about Slovenia, but I know for sure that on Croatian coast's harbours quality level has increased a lot, and you could find some good Marina close to bigger towns (Pula, Zadar, Split just to mention some of them) in which you can find whatever you may ever need...

Hmm, while I admit things have enormously improved in Croatia there just isn't the same quantity of resources (and I think, attitude) as in Italy. I was in Umag, Rovinj, Pula, Mali Losinj and Zadar, plus many other smaller harbours, throughout this summer - so I'm not out of touch or out of date - and I know where I would get my boat maintained (Italy) despite the admittedly higher initial cost.

Try these guys, they are based not far from Trieste with a number of retail
outlets in a number of sailing centres. I have had some good deals with
discounts from them.

I visited the marina in Slovenia a year ago. Looks very nice and
professional, although I wasn't asking specifically for recommendations.
Lots of very nice sailboats, well maintained. They are building Elmarine
sailboats there.

If you do follow up this potential Italian supplier and still will be
fitting out in Koper, be sure to insist that the Italian tax (VAT/ETA) is
deducted as effectively you will be exporting from an EU country to a non-EU
country (Slovenia). At the same time, be aware that you may then be liable
to Slovenian tax on importing the goods - this may well be higher. I
reproduce from a posting I made earlier in uk.rec.sailing:

me by explaining the mystery of the preponderance of USA-flagged
yachts in the Adriatic this year. They were, in fact, Slovenian, and

My understanding was from this guy's explanation, is that they all just
applied to whomsoever registers boats in the Delaware state administration
who then supplied all the registration documentation for their boats; it
didn't seem to matter that they were not American nationals, residents of
Delaware or even the USA. Perhaps it is a scam, or a loophole that a company
can exist stateside and who sells registrations, I dunno the details. I just
know that this particular guy bought a yacht outside of his country,
Slovenia, and paid 100 US dollars to register it as a US boat, imported it
to Slovenia, keeps it there and sails it with ol' glory stuck on the stern.
At least he spoke good English, although without an American accent.

Standard flag of convenience stuff - happens in a lot of places. Plenty of
non-British owned yachts, especially big, expensive motor ones, in the
Mediterranean, flying the red ensign of British registry from Guernsey and
Jersey in the Channel Islands, just like Panama and Liberia do with
commercial shipping. It is just as easy to register a yacht in Vienna
without being Austrian or even living there, I did it myself once because of
a favourable technicality in doing so. Austria, a country with no coastline
whatsoever, if you ignore the Danube river - LOL. Well, at least my wife is
Austrian, not that that had anything to do with it.
