Spilled battery!!
 

I had a battery become loose and tip over during a rough passage and have
battery acid in my battery compartment. What can I use to neutralize the acid
and clean up the mess without ruining my pants.

Yeah, Mike, mix up as strong a solution of baking soda as you can and slosh
it all around the battery tray. It will fizz and sizzle as the acid is
neutralized, so keep pouring the stuff on until the fizzing stops. Then
rinse thoroughly with fresh water, dry things off--and tie those batteries
down with metal brackets.

To save your pants, don't kneel in the acid.

To save your boat, neutralize the acid with baking soda and water. Add baking
soda until it stops fizzing. Add water. Add more baking soda. If it doesn't
fizz any more, dump out the remainder (now a neutral salt plus baking soda).

How about replacing the battery with an optima deep cycle.. mount it
upside down if you want. That is after you clean up the acid wick backing
soda as per everyone else's suggestion (thanks Kelton and Behan).

NEVER use a metal Bracket to hold down a battery. If it comes lose, the
chances of a short and fire are excellent.
An Oak 1x2 across the battery is better with threaded rod at each end,
Better still are The Polypropelene Tie-downs that use a ratchet mechism.

Metal brackets are fine when used the right way: clamping the flange at the
bottom of the battery, just like it's done in cars.
