since last year my friend bought an old Snipe with number 5992 and he
restaured it.
The boat also had 2 old sails with this tekst on it:

Cowes

Ratsey & Lapthorn
1037

and the small foc sail

Ratsey & Lapthorn


Could you help us by letting us know if this sail used to be part of this
boat and would you know how old this boat might be using it's number?

Dave - language and identification problem with your description - but here
goes.
Fit the sails on the boat and you will know your answer. If the mainsail
has the Snipe class emblem, then they are sails for the boat. Most often
the sail number correlated to the hull number but is not required. Many
racers will have practice sails, not usual for racers to have many sets of
sails.

At the tack of the sails both main or jib
1. should be the identification of the sailmaker Cowes, R & L as
example
2. royalty patch - if the boat was raced there will be a inked stamp
with date. This means the sails were measured within class specs and can be
used in all Snipe regattas. No stamp no racing.

Snipes - a old class which many a great sailor's roots started here. Still
a big racing class in many countries.
