I'd never try to shoot an .38 Special in a gun designed for .38S&W, but the other way around sounds

reasonable. The .38S&W is a little more snug, but doesn't require any forcing to get into or out of

the chamber. I may give them a shot next time I'm at the range.

Why?

Wouldn't trust the frame of the gun. And, I wouldn't go buy a .38S&W just to test the theory.

I meant why would you shoot 38 S&W in a 38 special?

They won't even fit in my Colt (well maybe of I tapped them in) and I

have heard you can have extraction trouble but I never actually tried

it.

Well, I've got a box of them, from somewhere. Probably given to me by a former-cop brother back

when. So I was wondering what to do with them They fit the .38 Special cylinders just fine, as I

said, except for being a little more snug. I'm talking about my Mod 28.

You should experiment with high power rounds mismatched to your firearms.

Doesn't make sense to me to stuff questionable ammo into a new gun. Johnny should trade or sell any oddball stuff he has. Good old common sense isn't so common in his world.

Go ahead and give it a try. I don't think it could hurt anything. Try
one, see if it extracts and you will know.

I'll try it next time I'm at the range. It for sure won't hurt that damn .357 on a .44 magnum frame!
If the extractor won't get the empty shells out, a punch will do the trick.

It wouldn't hurt a Chief. Any .38 special is far stronger than the
.38SWs SAMMI makes them load down to.
I looked at a couple typical 38SW loadings and they are talking about
148 gr bullet at around 650 FPS.
My low power wadcutters went faster than that.

Yup. These are 146 grain, lead, 685 fps from what I can find. Not much difference.

What makes a "big foot" a big foot as opposed to just a 60 Merc?
The big foot has the next larger lower unit. A 40-60 BF uses the 75-90
foot.

Got it, but why? Is it for more severe service, etc?

I've seen a claim that it will get your boat up on plane quicker, although you'll probably sacrifice a couple miles an hour on the top end.
I liked the heavier duty lower end...just in case I ever hit anything.

It won't help if you hit something.
