Yeah. glopping around inside the crank case isn't fun,and messy as
well.

is an external kit that hard to install? Like, needing machine work,
etc?

What do you gotta' do to get to it? Replace, clean, other???

No, it's about the same amount of work as installing a new oil filter. But, the kits are not cheap:

Of course, 20 years ago they were only about half that. Should have bought one. Have you ever been
to Harper's? They're over by KC, but if I ever go through that neck of the woods again, I may stop
and look around. They've got the reputation of being the most expensive place in the US for Guzzi
stuff, but they also have the best selection.

Change the oil, replace the filter. But to get to the filter the pan must be dropped.

Here's a picture. You can see where the filter is located. The pan below must be dropped, all 18
bolts.
