Fresh water pump?

Over the winter I'm pulling the boat out of the slip for a bit, and am going to set it up for dual batteries (already have the second battery as a spare, just need the switch and cables). I'm a lake boater, and have always wanted a fresh water wash-down pump.

How does that setup work? I know I'll need a pump, wiring and hoses, but I want to just pull lake water from a pickup. Where does that typically mount, how are they configured, etc. It's on a pontoon, anyone with experience?

Where does that typically mount.

Underwater

how are they configured, etc.

I would probably attach a pickup screen to a pipe then attach the pipe
to the engine bracket or something else. But I would be reluctant to
drill into the pontoon itself. Select a pump rated for washdown duty,
hopefully with an automatic pressure switch.

It's on a pontoon, anyone with experience?

sorry, no.

I think I would make some kind of permanant, but external drop down
style pump... Could be as simple as a small loop that holds the hose
up under the deck someplace, easy to drop down and feed the pump...

That could work too.

The center pontoon has about a 2x2 "well" in the rear that fills with water at rest and drains while running. While typing this it occurs to me that would be the ideal place to put the water pickup. It would be protected there.

That's the best bet then. I wouldn't have any pickup that was
permanently attached that stuck out anywhere, you wouldn't have it too
long around these parts!

Thanks for the reply. I'm wanting something permanently mounted and wired, though. I'll use something like this:

http://www.overtons.com/modperl/product/details.cgi?pdesc=Jabsco-3-0-GPM-Washdown-Kit-With-Hose&i=73447&str=washdown+pump&merchID=4005

Now that I worked out in my mind where I'll pull the water from, it's an easy job to figure out where to mount the pump, run the wires, and mount a switch.

Grab another 30 feet of tubing and another quick disconnect or two and
mount a connector on the opposite corner/end of the boat... It would
be nice to have one up near the bow too, outside the passenger area in
case you had a need for fresh water up on the beach where you are
pulled up. Just have the intake back near the engine. You could
actually make a quick shower, wash off stuff up on the shore before
loading into the boat, put out your camp fire.... spray the kids...

Question. Is your pontoon an outboard or like a mercruiser with an I/
0, and if it is an I'O What engine does it have? There's a reason I'm
asking...

It's an outboard, 250 Yamaha 4 stroke.

OK. I was confused. I thought it was an i/o with a 5.7 chevy...

Good idea, if I had kids and ever beached the boat. :-)
The only time it ever gets beached is when we do the river trip to Charleston, and go out to the end of Kiawah Island. Then I wouldn't want to spray down with salt water!
