Default Exploring the leper colony in Haro Strait (Pacific NW waters)

Over on the Facebook Page for Pacific Nor'West Boating there is a
series of photos taken on D'Arcy Island.

D'Arcy, located between Vancouver and San Juan Island, was where the
Canadians sent all of their Chinese lepers. The Caucasian lepers were
shipped to New Brunswick, where they got the best treatment then
available. The Chinese were pretty well abandoned on D'Arcy- once a
month the supply boat would drop off blankets, food, opium, and
coffins. Social mores were a lot different 100 years ago, and
apparently it just seemed natural to segregate the lepers by race.

There is no marina, and it's very difficult to anchor near D'Arcy, so
few boaters ever venture there.

There will be another photo or two added just about every day between
now and June 1.

Also up is a video of Desolation Sound, (found on YouTube) nicely
enhanced with a recording of the song "Oh, Heavenly Day" Definitely
worth a look.
