We just finished spending a week in Key West and have been there
numerous times before. That said, it still comes down to what you
are interested in. Assuming you like boats and fishing, the water
front walk around Key West Bight is a "must do". This is the heart
of all the charter fishing boat activity, the sunset cruises, small
boat rental, water front restaurants, miscelaneous pubs, dive boats,
glass bottom boats, parasailing, etc. From Key West Bight you can
also catch an excursion bost out to the Dry Tortugas and Fort
Jefferson, definitely an interesting day on the water.

Google Maps - "Key West Bight, Monroe, FL"

A lot of people go to Key West for the pubs and music. The heart of
all that is on Duval Street, particularly the north end. Just walk
around and listen from the doorway until you find something you like.

The north end of Duval is also close to Mallory Square where everyone
goes to watch the sunsets and take in the sights with all of the
street performers. It is also where the cruise ships dock but they
are required to depart before sunset. Mallory Square and the sunset
scene should definitely be on your must do list.

Google Maps - "Mallory Square, Key West, FL"

Other things you might find interesting are Ernest Hemmingway's house,
Harry Truman's vacation retreat, and the "Southern Most Point".

I'd also recommend taking a tour on the Key West Conch train. The
concept is a bit hokey but it is a good way to get a quick overview of
the town and a smattering of local history. Their station is near
Mallory Square and the north end of Duval.

I assume you already have a place to stay. If not I'd recommend the
Pier House Resort, The Hyatt next door, or the Galleon Hotel. All of
them are conveniently located. I've never stayed there but the Pier
House seems like it is a cut above the rest and they have a lot of
parking available.

Perhaps but there is still a lot of it going on. With good behavior
and a modicum of discretion your chances of being hasseled seem to be
minimal.

A lot depends on how long you are going to be there.
What kind of "boat"?
Like Wayne says, the cruise ships are only there in the day time. Key
West comes alive at sundown, starting at Mallory Square where street
performers do just about anything you can think of for tips.

Then you have the walk up Duval street. Take the shortcut through the
market, go by Captain Tony's if just so you can sing the song.

The song? Last Mango in Paris?

Then
cut through the Hog's Breath, get a beer and wave to us on the web
cam and then out on Duval. Sloppy Joe's is across the street. The
party really starts there and goes about a mile up Duval.
They started cracking down on drinking on the street but it is not
absolutely a rule. Sometimes the best place to listen to the music is
on a bench outside. They do get loud.

Ahh...drinking...well, that's probably a leg up on the ladder for some
participants in a so-called "boating" newsgroup. How about a thread
about walking on the beach and picking up shells?

I wonder if Sarah Palin could see Cuba from Key West?

If you are there for a few days, there is a nice beach down past the
Truman house. (grilles tables etc) It is not a horrible walk from
Duval Street.
They do rent those GEM electric cars.
It is man made from the dredging when they were digging the harbor and
really one of the few beaches in the Keys. Most of the time you are
walking on coral rock until you are in the water.
Some hotels and resorts have made little patches of beach but this is
a nice sized one.
The water there is unbelievable if you have never been in the
Caribbean.
A snorkeling trip or diving if you have a card is worth doing.

The best dive is actually about 35 miles up the Keys at Looe Key
Marine Sanctuary (Big Pine Key). That is a protected reef in shallow
enough water so snorkeling is reasonable. It is better than Pennekamp
in my opinion.

Of course there is some pretty good fishing once you get away from
downtown Key West.

My wife is a non swimmer and I am not a good swimmer so we will be
snorkleing in shallow water, most likely at Bahia Honda or near our camp.
Do you recommend water shoes for protection? If so what brand/style?

If you want to walk on the beach and pick up shells, go to Sanibel.
Not much shelling in Key West, unless you buy them from a store.

Bahia Honda is the next island up from Big Pine. (MM37-38 area)
There is a state park there with a little beach and some snorkeling
but not really a reef.
If you are not good swimmers you probably don't want to do the dive
boat thing

A lot of people like those slipper looking things in the water.
I don't wear shoes in the water but you will need something to just
walk around the land. It is all coral rock. I wear my boat shoes but I
wear my boat shoes everywhere. The traditional Keys footwear is flip
flops. Campgrounds used to sell Hiawatha and I still have a pair but
it has been about 27 years since I camped down there.
Once I introduced the boys to renting a house for our lobster trips,
we never camped again. ;-)
It really isn't that much more expensive once you add up all of those
little fees campgrounds charge.

I've been trying to wear out a pair of original style Crocks for at
least 5 years now.
i use 'em as slippers around the house, as boat shoes and beach shoes.
I even walk the dog in them sometimes. Wish I could wear them out..
they've never looked the same since I splashed oil based paint all
over them while spinning a paint roller clean.

remove by sloshing your feet around in the water.

The only problem with that kind of shoe in the keys is that small
chips of coral rock and shell get trapped in there. That is why Flip
Flops are so popular. Less strappage to trap shells.

I have to be careful in my boat shoes not to kick up too much stuff.

These things are great - in and out of the boat:

http://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/72766?feat=503381-GN2

The only problem with that kind of shoe in the keys is that small
chips of coral rock and shell get trapped in there. That is why Flip
Flops are so popular. Less strappage to trap shells.

I have to be careful in my boat shoes not to kick up too much stuff.

All that said I see people in Crocs but usually on the street in KW,
not kicking around a camp ground.

Hell, I get sand and shells right here in the Potomac. I just put foot
in water, shake it around,
and out comes the bad stuff.

And you let your grandkids swim and splash in the Potomac south of the
Wilson Bridge. Blech.

Who lives north of the bridge? Barry and Mitch?

Aside from their funky look, Crocs are very practical footwear at the
beach or in the dinghy. They do tend to trap sand but it is easy to
remove by sloshing your feet around in the water.

Try to find a pair of 'true' size 13 1/2 Crocs.

They're made of rubber. They'll stretch to fit.

It ain't *soft* rubber! Now if they were made of 'rubbers' rubber, they might stretch enough.

I was more thinking about walking around on the campground itself.
This is just going to be a coral rock desert, not a watery place. It
is not really sand, more like "87" gravel made up of petrified shell
fragments.

I have all sorts of footwear for use on land. My concern was for foot
protection in the waters of the Keys where sandy beaches are non existent.

Yes, and those shell fragments are sharp, too!

If I was wading I think I would get those slipper style water shoes. I
was always in deep water and had my flippers on 99% of the time.
The park at Bahia Honda does have one of those rare sand beaches I
believe.
If you are not barefooted a lot and have a good sense of what you are
stepping on you probably should us the slippers tho.
Watch out for sting rays. Shuffle your feet along the bottom when you
walk. If you step on a sting ray you might get to see the Fisherman's
Hospital in Marathon. ;-)

Shuffle feet. Yes. Good advice. ;-)

That would be the one. They even have the lyric on the bathroom wall.

Then
cut *through the Hog's Breath, get a beer and wave to us on the web
cam and then out on Duval. Sloppy Joe's is across the street. The
party really starts there and goes about a mile up Duval.
They started cracking down on drinking on the street but it is not
absolutely a rule. Sometimes the best place to listen to the music is
on a bench outside. They do get loud.

I've been trying to wear out a pair of original style Crocks for at
least 5 years now.
i use 'em as slippers around the house, as boat shoes and beach shoes.
I even walk the dog in them sometimes. Wish I could wear them out..
they've never looked the same since I splashed oil based paint all
over them while spinning a paint roller clean.

I think you have the 5 years wrong. By looking at the picture of your
house it's been a LOT longer than five years since you touched it with

West comes alive at sundown, starting at Mallory Square where street
performers do just about anything you can think of for tips.

Then you have the walk up Duval street. Take the shortcut through the
market, go by Captain Tony's if just so you can sing the song..

The song? Last Mango in Paris?

That would be the one. They even have the lyric on the bathroom wall.

Then
cut *through the Hog's Breath, get a beer and wave to us on the web
cam and then out on Duval. Sloppy Joe's is across the street. The
party really starts there and goes about a mile up Duval.
They started cracking down on drinking on the street but it is not
absolutely a rule. Sometimes the best place to listen to the music is
on a bench outside. They do get loud.

I've been trying to wear out a pair of original style Crocks for at
least 5 years now.
i use 'em as slippers around the house, as boat shoes and beach shoes.
I even walk the dog in them sometimes. * Wish I could wear them out..
they've never looked the same since I splashed oil based paint all
over them while spinning a paint roller clean.
http://www.crocs.ca/mens-crocs-footw...,en_CA,sc.html

I think you have the 5 years wrong. By looking at the picture of your
house it's been a LOT longer than five years since you touched it with
paint. Maybe you were painting someone else's house?

Climbing a ladder and painting outside in Crocs?
Are you really that stupid, Kevin?

There you go again!!!! You got your ass handed to you because it was
shown over and over that I'm not someone named Kevin, but you are too
stupid to quit! And what's so stupid about painting outside in Crocs?

If you can't figure out why climbing a ladder in Crocs might be
dangerous, you're way beyond any help I can offer, Kevin.

If you are there for a few days, there is a nice beach down past
the
Truman house. (grilles tables etc) It is not a horrible walk from
Duval Street.
They do rent those GEM electric cars.
It is man made from the dredging when they were digging the
harbor and
really one of the few beaches in the Keys. Most of the time you are
walking on coral rock until you are in the water.
Some hotels and resorts have made little patches of beach but
this is
a nice sized one.
The water there is unbelievable if you have never been in the
Caribbean.
A snorkeling trip or diving if you have a card is worth doing.

The best dive is actually about 35 miles up the Keys at Looe Key
Marine Sanctuary (Big Pine Key). That is a protected reef in
shallow
enough water so snorkeling is reasonable. It is better than
Pennekamp
in my opinion.

Of course there is some pretty good fishing once you get away from
downtown Key West.

My wife is a non swimmer and I am not a good swimmer so we will be
snorkleing in shallow water, most likely at Bahia Honda or near
our camp.
Do you recommend water shoes for protection? If so what brand/style?

I've been trying to wear out a pair of original style Crocks for at
least 5 years now.
i use 'em as slippers around the house, as boat shoes and beach
shoes.
I even walk the dog in them sometimes. Wish I could wear them out..
they've never looked the same since I splashed oil based paint all
over them while spinning a paint roller clean.

I think you have the 5 years wrong. By looking at the picture of your
house it's been a LOT longer than five years since you touched it with
paint. Maybe you were painting someone else's house?

Climbing a ladder and painting outside in Crocs?
Are you really that stupid, Kevin?

You wear Crocks! LOL!!!

You got a problem with that, Girlieman?

Yeah, I think you are a pussy... I got a good laugh thinking of your
fat, bald, bowlegged ass standing there with your plaid shirt half
untucked, a yellow fedora, black socks, crocks, suckin' down a chili
dog..... LOL!

You don't need to make **** up about him. He's goofy enough in real life.

A lot depends on how long you are going to be there.
What kind of "boat"?
Like Wayne says, the cruise ships are only there in the day
time. Key
West comes alive at sundown, starting at Mallory Square where
street
performers do just about anything you can think of for tips.

Then you have the walk up Duval street. Take the shortcut
through the
market, go by Captain Tony's if just so you can sing the song.

The song? Last Mango in Paris?

That would be the one. They even have the lyric on the bathroom
wall.

Then
cut through the Hog's Breath, get a beer and wave to us on the
web
cam and then out on Duval. Sloppy Joe's is across the street. The
party really starts there and goes about a mile up Duval.
They started cracking down on drinking on the street but it is
not
absolutely a rule. Sometimes the best place to listen to the
music is
on a bench outside. They do get loud.

If he was eating a chili dog, he probably bought it himself with either
a paycheck or a pension check, neither of which you could do.

Would that be better than buying said chili dog with dividends from
investments?

How would you outfit an inflatable for gunk-holeing around the islands?
