The park service never considers the obvious solutions. :-) The whole thing could be organized like a bass tournament with a Le Mans start everyday, sponsorship money, and a Snake Hunter channel on cable TV. Behind every problem is an opportunity ! |

Behind every problem is an opportunity ! I like it. Might not solve the problem, but it would give those of us who can't stand 'The Bachelor' a good show to watch. |

Behind every problem is an opportunity ! There are people in Water management who have the right answer but it is not politically correct enough. There is an export market for the intestines of a python. The Chinese are paying big bucks for them and it has made these snakes extinct in a lot of their native range. They could easily simply open up the hunt to people harvesting this resource and really hurt the population. The fear is that the hunters will be worse for the environment than the snakes Sounds to me like a whole new industry free range anaconda, better than the farm raised anaconda. You can create two markets |

There is an ongoing program to kill them in SFWMD managed areas. My son in law has been out there with the hunters. The big problem is these things are real hard to see. You get marsh grass and a few inches of water and you can step on one before you see it. There are some real good infra red goggles that will let you see them at night as long as they are not underwater but they can stay underwater quite a while. The basic plan is to shoot whatever part you see with a shotgun and then hope you can hit a vital spot with a follow up shot *when they jump. Some of the pros are pretty good at it. You have to be fast tho because you are never sure which way the head is if you just see some of the body. The bite is very serious, even tho there is no venom. Imagine a big dog with a buttload of backward pointing teeth. Once you are bit, they can't really let go all that easily, particularly if you are pulling away. Shotgun? Screw that... .308 !!!!! |
