I'm not in the bay near as much as I used to be, because golf, which I took up when I turned 60, has really cut into my fishing time. The grandkids like either the Potomac or Lake Anna. If you like looking at lots of estuary wildlife in one of the few unspoiled estuaries in the country, Estero bay is a pretty cool place. That is why I moved here Don't know if you've ever heard of Useppa Island, which is down south of you. That island played a role in the series of books I'm about to finish. The series is historical fiction, but the role played by the island, a home for union sympathizers during the Civil War, was factual. The series is the 'Honor' series by Robert N. Macomber. But, I'm getting older'n hell. I think the Union sympathizers who staged from Useppa were much more successful than the Bay of Pigs guys. |

It's Illinois largest man-made lake"Man-made, because the Army Corps of Engineers dammed up the Kaskaskia River back in the early 50's and make it quite a fishing, boating area. Lot's of sailboats, too. Plenty of room and on the busiest holidays it's not crowded. It's very wweell kept and has a $3.00 launch fee. It's 60 miles from my house to the East Access Launch site: http://www.carlylelake.com/Maps/lakemap2.htm If wanting to take a short run, there's Omega Lake at Stephen Forbes state park. http://www.bikingillinois.com/photos/SAForbesLake.jpg It's a nice picnic lake which can be great for skiing, tubing and fishing. But gets crowded on holiday weekends. but through the week, it seems you can have the whole place for yourself. No launch fees and a really nice launch facility. Another thing about the lake is stay away from the shoreline, even if it seems deep, it's a good way to catch a stump and ruin an outdrive. But it IS a fun little place. |

Is called the Sunshine Coast. I have not boated that side of the straights but do boat the Vancouver Island side. Is a protected area, as Vancouver Island has 6-7000' mountain range running up the middle of the island. There are some warm water swimming areas as the 13' tides uncover large sand area that heat from the sun and warm the water as it returns. Parksville where we normally stop for a night on our trips will have 70 degree water on sunny days. Beautiful scenery as well as decent fishing. Nice RV parks as well as reasonable B&B's to allow me to suck up to SWMBO. |
