Why would a salesman want to go out there and bust his ass if his commissions were on a diminishing scale? If you tell someone in a job interview that harder they work and the more they earn that they are going to take home less pay. That is going to motivate the hell out of them isn't it? This reminds me of the GTE cell phone salesmen I knew in the late 80's and early 90's. These guys were out busting their asses selling cell phone services to companies and individuals. These guys were making $120,000 to $150,000 a year on a straight commissions. The company decided that they guys were making too much money so they capped their commissions at $160,000 per year. The guys worked until they reached their maximum and then they sat around the office drinking coffee all day long. Their managers were ****ed because they guys were no longer bringing in the sales. There was no incentive for the guys to bring in the sales. The senior executives were furious that they weren't going to hit their quarterly and yearly numbers and the soon found out that when you remove the incentive for working people stop working.
