Anyone have any recommendations on submersible binoculars?

(Just because a product claims to be waterproof does not necessarily
imply it is also submersible and therefore more appropriate for
kayaking.)

I have found, with a google search, some Promaster Infinity binoculars
which are submersible...anyone know anything about the quality of their
products?

I would be interested in checking out monoculars as well, if anyone has
any suggestions on submersible versions of those as well.

Check out the Brunton 6x monocular. It's waterproof, but I'm not sure to
what depth.

Unfortunately, just because a product claims to be waterproof does not
imply it is submersible to any depth. For example, the Princeton Tec
Yukon HL LED Headlamp is labeled as being waterproof, but a response I
got from Princeton Tec indicated that this meant it was only waterproof
in a heavy rain or snow, not that it could be submerged and be expected
to survive.

However, based on a reply from the company, the Brunton 6x monocular is
apparently submersible up to 1 meter for a period of 5 minutes. This is,
of course, more then enough time to get out of the water in the vast
majority of situations, but I still might prefer a product that had
better submersible parameters.

Sea kayaker mag has a review of waterproof binoculars - I don't
remember which issue and the article is not available on line. Check
the website.

Thanks. I found the article index at:

http://www.seakayakermag.com/PDFs/SK-Index.pdf

and in this document, found:

Issue 75, Apr. 2000, p. 60: "The Best Waterproof Binoculars
for Kayaking" by Gary Luhm

I would guess that since this review things have changed in the
marketplace quite a bit. I have written to them and have asked if they
plan to write an article on the current state of submersible binoculars.

A little old, I agree but I don't think high quality optical devices
are redesigned that often. I have the article - unfortunately I just
trashed my fax machine but I'll snail mail it to you gratis if you
give me your address.

If anyone is interested...

The reply I got back from Sea Kayaker Mag was that they had no plans to
update that particular article.

However, they might do another similar one when image stabilizing
binoculars come down in price.

Didn't even know that there were image stabilizing binoculars
available...

I've had excellent results with ones made by Steiner, a German company.
Rather pricey but incredible optics and waterproof. Here is URL for
Sierra Trading Post. They almost always have discontinued models at
significant discounts. Still pricey at discounted levels.

Thanks. Checked their Bargain Barn and didn't see any listed at this
time, but I will continue checking.

I think the "submersible binoculars" you want for kayaking are actually
called a "perisocope". They are used on submarines when submerged and
would be ideal for kayaks upside down in the water. I assume that is when
a kayak paddler would want them most.

I couldn't find information on whether they were also submersible, but
upon writing to the company, the 8x30 Navigator binoculars are rated for
a depth of 15 feet for 45 minutes and can withstand a temperature change
of 70 degrees with no fogging. (I am guessing this is going to be true
of their other waterproof binoculars as well.)

Pretty amazing specs.

Prior to this, I could only find submersible binoculars that were rated
to a depth of 1 meter for 5 minutes.

Try Sierra Trading Post again and skip the Bargain Barn - this is for
items at 75% or more off list. The entire site has discounted and
discontinued items. Type "steiner" in search window at top of Sierra
Trading Post home page, hit the enter key. Last time I looked they had
6 different Steiner models. Not inexpensive even at Sierra. Mine have
spent a lot of time on the floor of my Klepper getting soaked in rough
seas off Hawaii, California and New England. My son has also taken my
pair on his climbing expeditions, Mt Rainer and Mt Denali. On his last
trip to Rainer this past May, I convinced him to buy his own pair.
Like the VHF and Garmin GPS, I won't go sea kayaking without the
Steiner binocs. Hard core paddler.

Try this URL - should take you right to Sierra Trading Post Steiner
binoculars. Sometimes these long search URLs do not work again due to
the way the web page is written. But give it a shot - they have 16
Steiner models listed.
