Outrigger Canoe: Recovering From Swamp?
Does anybody have some thoughts on recovering a 2-man outrigger
canoe from swamp in heavy chop? viz: http://homepages.paradise.net.nz/garyd/ulua.html The 6-man outrigger procedures all seem to involve bailing like crazy and hoping water goes out faster than it comes in from chop. From what I've read so far, the real solution is two words: Floatation Bags. I've also read a couple of articles on "Shake Out" and wonder if the principle could be applied fore-aft instead of port-starboard. viz: http://tinyurl.com/6zroo22 One guy had a clever rig - operated by somebody in the water - that sort of levered bags full of water over the gunwale. viz: http://tinyurl.com/4346jmd Another described a procedure where air-filled bags were deployed in such a way that righting the hull would roll it up on the bags, dumping water as it came over. Finally, I wonder if a broken wing config could be flipped up on to the broken wing ama in such a way as to dump water and then be let down relatively empty - without too high a probability of turtle-Ming the thing - analogous to the air-filled bag approach.
