Just about everone who boats has a favorite island or two. How about
everone listing some of theirs, along with some high points?

I'll start:

Northeast: Block Island and Martha's Vineyard. Both are convenient
to Long Island Sound and the NY/CT metro areas. Both have great
scenery and well protected harbors. Both have good fishing and
supplies.

Caribbean: St Martin's, Antigua and Martinique - all for slightly
different reasons but all have good harbors, scenery, beaches and
ambience.

Hi Wayne,

I have fond memories of time spent at Hope Town (Elbow Cay), Marsh Harbour
(Great Abaco), Spanish Wells (St. Georges Cay), Chub Cay and Fort Jefferson
(Garden Key).

Specifically, having locals bring a delicious dinner of Bahamian food to the
boat while at anchor in the beautiful harbor of Hope Town. Hottest damned
peppers I've ever encountered. Little yellow buggers would bring tears to
your eyes. Also, a wonderful day of fishing and conching out of Spanish
Wells guided by the one and only Aziel Bertram Pinder. A white-knuckle
landing at Marsh Harbour airport. Come to think of it, the departure
take-off was pretty wild as well. I was offered a chance to go fishing with
some guys I met at the marina at Chub Cay. They had a long and narrow
center console with BIG triple outboards. I swear the boat was in the air
as much as it was in the water. Fun ride. And finally, trading cold beer
for fresh shrimp with a shrimp boat off Fort Jefferson.

Good choices Russ. We have fond memories of Marsh Harbour, Hope Town
and Spanish Wells also. I assume you are talking about Ft Jefferson
in the Dry Tortugas? Very unique place. We had a Giant Grouper that
must have weighed at least 300 pounds camped out under our boat the
whole time we were there. Ever once in awhile he'd stick his nose
out where we could see him.

If you haven't been to Staniel Cay in the Exumas, I think you'd enjoy
that area also.

I have no doubt that people go to Castaway Cay and have a great time.
Disney is very good at what they do. What bothers me is that a
company like Disney buys an island, takes it private, changes the
name to something cutesy and American, excludes the natives and
everyone other than a Disney customer, builds a minature Disney World,
and calls it the Bahamas. It's not even close to being the Bahamas
except for some of the scenery.

I liked Jamaica in the 60s, not so much since.
You are right about the Yucatan (Cozumel and Cancun) I think there are
more Mexicans on Ft Myers beach than there are there.

St Thomas was nice.

Especially at the top of the island where you can look all around.

Kauai'i - but I've never boated there but took a Catamaran tour of

But I've never really been to very many islands except on the Wabash

I don't think you limited your question to 'favorite Bahama islands'. Having been on many of the
Bahama Islands, I can say that Castaway Cay has *very little* resemblance to any of the other
islands in the Bahamas.

Having spent three weeks thereon, I can also say that Great Egg Island is probably the most
miserable friggin' island in the Bahamas.

Yes to both of those, although Castaway Cay certainly is in the
Bahamas and I'd be willing to bet that Disney bills it that way.

Heh. That is just about the end of the world although nearby Royal

happen to draw the short straw on that assignment? We've been near

For a real bargain however, hop the daily mail boat out of Ft
Lauderdale or find a cut rate gambling junket to Nassau/Paradise
Island.

I don't think you limited your question to 'favorite Bahama islands'. Having been on many of the
Bahama Islands, I can say that Castaway Cay has *very little* resemblance to any of the other
islands in the Bahamas.

Yes to both of those, although Castaway Cay certainly is in the
Bahamas and I'd be willing to bet that Disney bills it that way.

Having spent three weeks thereon, I can also say that Great Egg Island is probably the most
miserable friggin' island in the Bahamas.

Heh. That is just about the end of the world although nearby Royal
Island, Spanish Wells and Eluthera are nice enough. How did you
happen to draw the short straw on that assignment? We've been near
there a few times but have never stopped. Is it actually inhabited?

No, it wasn't inhabited when we were there. We built two 126' steel towers on the island and used a
geodimeter to measure the distance to similar towers on Hole-in-the-Wall, Abaco and other places. I
was working for the US Coast and Geodetic Survey out of Cape Canaveral at the time. It later melded
in to NOAA. We'd live on the island during the week, but come back to the Auxilliary Air Force Base
on Eleuthera for the weekend.
