I am considering the purchase of a pygmy kayak. It requires building.
I am inexperienced in building boats. Does anyone know of a reputable boat/kayak builder in the San Diego, CA area? Thanks |

I'll consider it, but I have an impatient 3-year old who may not endure my inexperience. Thanks again Alonzo |

The 3-year old probably won't be a lot of help but it would be a great father-son/daughter project. Good point, John. I'm reminded of his excitement when we found a disgarded bicycle by a dumpster we refurbished. You'd think he'd awaken to find a brand new bicycle under the christmas tree. Concerned about using chemicals around him though. Alonzo |

I also know a woman that had no woodworking experience whatsoever and built a Pygmy Coho (in her living room, no less). It came out really nice. I noticed that absolute beginners seem to be able to make nice S&G kayaks. I saw one made by an experienced woodworker and it was exceptional. However, I don't think many people would notice the difference. Mike |

Concerned about using chemicals around him though. As you should be. I'm sure that you could find eye protection and a respirator to fit though. Be sure to take pictures of the 3 year old in the safety gear if you proceed with this project with your helper. I have built a couple of boats and have thought that the next boat I build will be a skin on frame boat for my son. I've got plenty of time as he's only 5 months old. |

There isn't a lot of woodworking on a S&G boat anyway. Patience and attention to detail likely contribute to a nice S&G boat as much as woodworking skills. An absolute beginner is probably more likely going to pay attention to every detail (fearing that they're going to do something wrong) than the experience woodworker that might not follow instructions as closely. The only area where experience really helps is in the varnishing. |
