My first reaction is that it's a bit large and heavy for a travel computer but if you're not going to be carrying it around through airports and on planes that doesn't matter so much. It certainly has a lot of memory and power, coupled with a large screen. If you want a small lightweight laptop you'd probably be happier with on of the Dell Inspirons. I have one that I purchased several years ago for about $500 that is fully loaded with features like a built in GPS, television receiver and long life battery (about 5 hours). My only gripe with it is the relatively small screen size of about 10 inches but that's what makes it small and light. My boat laptops are Panasonic CF-29 Toughbooks that I purchased off-lease for around $350 each. They are practically armor plated but are definitely on the heavy side for a travel computer. There are some really funny Youtube videos about Toughbook laptops if you do a search. My favorite is the one where a guy complains that the screen is dirty so he takes it over to the sink and starts washing it under running water while he is still browsing the web. They are definitely good boat computers. I don't worry about weight. The more it weighs, the more calories I'll burn carrying it. That Panasonic Toughbook costs too damn much. I like the big screen, but I'm not happy about the battery life. I guess it takes a lot to power that screen. Usually I'll have a 120v socket nearby. Don't need it for the boat. Know my way around my 'fishin' holes' pretty well, and the GPS helps. I may even dig out a chart every now and then! |

They are usually in excellent condition and come with some sort of warranty. If you want heavy and rugged, you can't beat a Toughbook. http://www.bobjohnson.com/laptop-phrases/used_panasonic_toughbooks_laptops.htm Bob Johnson runs a reputable operation. |

Kind of heavy for a laptop if you are planning to carry it around. When you add in the power supply, you're probably close to nine pounds. |

Anyone ever heard of it? http://tinyurl.com/4xhpyk6 My wife has one and it's a nice machine, but it is heavy. and it's also loaded with Visa, which is kind of a pain, but it does everything she needs it for, which is a lot more than what i need. She's had no problem with the machine itself, but the battery died w/in warranty, and who ever she bought it from sent her one out promptly and a call tag to send the defective one back shipping paid both ways. |

The Geek Squad at Best Buys will remove all that stuff for $25. Not sure if they'll work on any computer, or if it has to be bought there. My wife's was very clean when she brought it home. |

Let's see...Tim's wife's computer was loaded with Visa, which "is kind of a pain..." Visa, aka Vista, is the operating system on that computer. Herring says the Best Buy boys will remove "all that stuff" (Vista) for $25. I wonder what parts of the operating system the Best Buy boys will remove, and how well the computer will run without them? |

If the computer is current, there's no way it'd be delivered with Vista. |
