A Field Guide to Paddling Forum Deviants

Posers - Lacking in actual paddling experience, Posers are
identifiable as they flit from topic to topic, presenting poor advice
and inconsistent claims backed by an obvious lack of specifics. Posers
favor quantity over quality, are often grimly determined to defend
their "offerings", even when contrary to common sense, and can be
vicious when cornered.

One Trick Ponies - OTPs are sure that the answer to every question is
the same, be it a particular model of boat or style of paddling.
Easily spotted due to their insistent and repetitious call, these
single-minded creatures are harmless if not aroused to defend the one
true way.

Sybils - Another often-harmless species, Sybils possess multiple
posting names, and occasionally multiple personalities. Their call has
been interpreted to mean, "I agree with me, I agree with me".

Nay Sayers - These malcontents are most easily identified by their
strident and repetitive call "Not, Not, Not" as they voice their
opposition to any opinion not originally their own. These raucous and
contrary creatures are tenacious in defending their territory, often
driving their victims underground. If permitted to roam freely Nay
Sayers may grow to be Flamers.

Flamers - One of the most disruptive of all forum delinquents. The
call of the Flamer frequently includes insults, name-calling and other
aggressive behavior. A crafty Flamer will often materialize, pour
gasoline on the embers of a still-smoldering fire and then vanish as
the conflagration consumes the weak and slow.

Trolls - The alpha males of the anti-social order and the most
destructive of all message board creatures. A troll, especially when
fed, can wreak havoc on non-moderated forums. Trolls display a
bewildering variety of plumage and behavior. For a comprehensive look
at Trolls, their impact and how to deal with them go to Wilko van den
Bergh's White Water Paddling site (http://wilko.webzone.ru/).

So, what other variety of forum critters have I forgotten?

I don't think that these are a seperate species at all really,
they are usually a subset of trolls, either those that create
extra "personalities" who post in support of them, which are
usually called sock puppets, or morphing trolls, who change
their posting identity frequently to avoid killfiles.

Of course it could just be that I haven't come across any "Sybils"
yet.

Well you forgot Pedants and netkops, who are the officious buggers
who will complain loudly and voicifereously about any post that they
see as off-topic (which is basically anything they disagree with)
both in the group and to the poster's ISP in an attempt to get them
disconnected.

Oh and Kooks, which is what I would classify timmy as, whose posts
disrupt the group not through any particular maliciousness, but
through their ****witted ideas and the lengths they go to defend them
to anyone who disagrees with him.

Let’s see, there’s People. Those desiring conversation around the topic of
the newsgroup. Waite, the others are people too. How about Normal People.
Waite, who get’s to define normal? Never mind.

Yes, you forgot "team testosterone" (not for just men anymore). You
know, the bullies that can't leave anyone alone who they feel is
contrarian, to the point of driving most of them off the list. You
will notice them as they usually have what they feel is the difinitive
answer to any and all topics, and if you disagree, you are toast. All
comments or suggestions from that point on are targets for insult or
ridicule once you have crossed their path.
Scotty, mostly a lurker now...
