Lower Gauley River in WV Whitewater Questions

Going rafting this weekend on the Lower Gauley in West Virginia.
Temperature is suppose to be 69 degrees F. How cold will the water
be? I've heard 30-40's but Im not believing that. Any help?

Don't believe it. During normal years, the water from the dam release is
between 50 to 55 degree. All the rain this year has kept the lake from forming
thermal layers, so the water temperature is above 60 degrees. Still cool enough
for a wetsuit, especially if its a little cloudy .

Where did you get that information?

I've been running the Gauley for 14 years and the water is never cold.

That info in normally available on the COE water qaulity page, outflow
temperatures.
The Summerville site is being rebuilt, so no current data. Paintsville Lake in
Ky, is a very similar dam set up. You might look at it and get a feel for what
the normal release temperatures range.
