selection of outboard engine 4-5hp
I would like an outboard engine on 22 foot sailboat. Read available
manufacturer staff. Have to limit to 4 stroke (California) I like Suzuki engine but most likely my choice is related to graphics of the web site . I admit it is all Greek to me. Need reliable engine to get out of narrow spots or just to get home . Decided on long shaft. choices available Suzuki ,Honda or Yamaha. Suzuki ????? do you like any one more than the others? Any recommendations really appreciated Jari |

Hi Jari,
I believe that Tahotsu/Nissan/Mercury are all the same 4 stroke in 4hp, 5hp and 6hp outboards @ 123cc / 7.5ci and 55# in short shaft. Yamaha has a 6hp and 8hp 4 stroke that are 83#. Honda has an 8hp and 9.9hp 4 stroke that are 92#. Honda and Yamaha have special high torque models that are for kicker motors on larger sail boats like yours. I think there big deal is they have almost as much thrust in reverse as in forward which is not so with standard outboards. I think I would go for a 10hp in one of these. -- Bill Kiene Kiene's Fly Shop Sacramento, CA www.kiene.com " wrote in message ... I would like an outboard engine on 22 foot sailboat. I had a 22-ft sailboat with a 7.5hp Merc, and that was plenty. A 5-6hp would be enough. The high-torque ones do sound like a good idea though. Lloyd |

I missed the original post so maybe this has already been mentioned but I would
highly recommend a 2 cylinder motor. The small single cylinders are noisier and the vibration will annoy the hell out of you. From what I remember, all 4 HP or less are 1 cyl. 5 HP might be either 1 or 2 and 6 HP on up are usually all 2 cyl. I bought a used 1987 4 hp Johnson 2 stroke, 2 cylinder that I really
like, except for the 2 stroke part. It only weighs 33#, which is a big deal to get on and off the dinghy. Because it's a 2 stroke, I leave it on the dinghy and pivot the whole works up on the swimstep. It uses practically no fuel and it very smooth and quiet. I have been using Pennzoil synthetic TC-III oil, which doesn't smell as bad as tthe regular stuff, but costs twice as much. For a new 4 stroke, I would probably buy the new Suzuki 4-6 hp. |

with my Catalina 22 I used a Suzuki
4hp 2 stroke but it did not run all that great, replaced it with a Nissan 5hp 2 stroke and it was plenty of power. Nissan 5 or 6hp 4 stroke should work just fine. |
