Two Days = Three Sturgeon on California Delta!
I finally headed out Tuesday for a couple of days on the river! Spent
Wednesday at Decker Island where I reeled in a shaker sturgeon - and released it. The outgoing was huge, and the debris in the water was a constant hassle. It would accumulate on the leader so thick that it seemed to almost float the weight off the bottom. I had to reel in and remove it every 20-30 minutes. I had a thrill about 9:00 that night as I tried to spend the night on the river off Decker. Just as I was about to hit the V-berth for the night, ka-WHUMP. Two 9 or 10 foot logs hit the chain rode and lodged in tightly. It took me about 15 minutes to loosen them and free the boat. Then another, about 40 feet long, floated by. That convinced me to head inside Decker to Horseshoe Bend for the night. Wednesday my friend Willie joined me and we wound up above Isleton in shallower water with a bit less debris. I got into two sturgeon there, about a 50 incher or so that came unbuttoned at the boat, and another maybe 60" that I somehow snagged in the side and had to chase down with the boat to release. I had a lot of good action even though I didn't actually catch a keeper! It sure was good to be back on the river. I plan another trip in a couple of weeks.
