No government employees have lost a dime in these shutdowns. If they
get a check, the check might be late but if it is a bank transfer it
will probably be right on time. They have always been given their back
pay, even though most stay home.

Think about that while you are locked out of the Smithsonian ... you
are still paying these people, to stay home.

Do you have any idea of the consequences of a gov't shutdown during a
recession like this???

no government-backed mortgages - 95% of the loans
no government student loans
delayed payment for the troops - so their families suffer, but the
troops still have to fight
delayed tax refunds - a week before tax day, you still have to pay
though if you owe money
no federal grants for roads, schools, or pretty much anything else
no new medical research at the National Institutes of Health
800,000 people who are furloughed - don't receive a dime until the
shutdown ends, so they can't spend money

Sure, they get paid eventually. Big deal. What happens if the shutdown
lasts more than a week or two? The economy takes a dive big time. And,
of course, this is the best time for that.

Oh, one thing you can do during the shutdown (besides pay your taxes
of course), you can go broke.

Now who is the paranoid?

These things are called "Close the Washington Monument" in DC. Not
much serious ever happens and if people get their pay EFT'ed it will
probably be right there.
Any agency that has their funding in order already will not be
affected anyway. I would be very surprised if DoD is not funded.
Didn't we just have a big deal about the defense appropriations bill?
(DADT etc) If that was done, they get paid.

During the Clinton shutdown, the USDA and DoD didn't get a day off
because they had their appropriations in place ... and so it goes.

This is kubuki theater, don't freak out over it.

BTW I would believe a piece in the Washington Post news room (not a
column) about this but most news outlets do not have a clue how
government funding works.

Since the right-wing nuts seem to be in control of the Republican lead
House, it's not farfetched to imagine that they will refuse to
compromise.

You've got plenty of paranoia about something that might or might not
happen in 30 years, but something that's in your face is no big deal.

Lets put it this way. Your toast.

During the "95 shutdown, they "closed" national parks etc and national
forests. So, I was driving up the Fl east coast and stopped and
walked into Canaveral National Seashore and took a pic of the waves
coming in and then on my way home took some pics of the trees in the
NAtional Forest and sent them to a liberal friend. He was puzzled at
their meaning until I pointed out the dates I had penned onto them.
In spite of the arrogance of govt workers thinking the sun rises and
sets on their essentialness, the waves kept coming in and the trees
kept growing even without govt management.

I assure you, the sun will continue to rise, the grass will still
grow, the waves will come in and the wind will still blow with the
govt shut down. The awful wailing you will hear will be the liberals
proclaiming the end of the world as they know it.

And, you'll continue to be an idiot.

Not at all, just checked. Belgium has now gone 300 days without most of
the federal government. They are talking of making it permanent as the
majority does not miss the corruption. Most believe they are better off.

Most people would not miss DC if most of DC shut down.

You are just brainwashed into thinking government is more important than
it is.

No reason it shouldn't work here! After all, TVs, light bulbs work here
too.

In fact, the savings could be huge. Shut them down for 7 months and
balance the budget. Tell Obama to eat popcorn and forget about the wars
he can't afford. Chasing camels and cocoa farmers for French colonial
interests isn't that important. But I am sure Obama will not loose his
soap box and have something to shoot his mouth off about.

Good thing about government shut downs, is like riots and protests they
might catch on. Maybe after Canada's election, Ottawa, then
UKLondon...would be a good move. Our governments have become fat pigs
and need a major diet.

You are just brainwashed into thinking government is more important than
it is.

No, you're just stupid. Last I checked, this country is called The
United State of America. I don't think we're located in Europe or
called Belgium.

No reason it shouldn't work here! After all, TVs, light bulbs work here
too.

In fact, the savings could be huge. Shut them down for 7 months and
balance the budget. Tell Obama to eat popcorn and forget about the wars
he can't afford. Chasing camels and cocoa farmers for French colonial
interests isn't that important. But I am sure Obama will not loose his
soap box and have something to shoot his mouth off about.

Good thing about government shut downs, is like riots and protests they
might catch on. Maybe after Canada's election, Ottawa, then
UKLondon...would be a good move. Our governments have become fat pigs
and need a major diet.

No, you're just an idiot.

Apparently, it is up to the Prez to determine which govt personnel are
"essential" to get paid and Clinton paid the military during the '95
shutdown. Obama has decided military are "nonessential" yet they are
required to work for possible pay later. Basically, Obama has decided
to make them work as slaves without compensation. DOES THIS SURPRISE
ANYBODY? Statists, regardless of what they claim, all believe in
slavery to the state. For Obama, "L'etat et Moi"

Who is going to go broke? Will not be working and producing people.
Maybe some parasites.

Shut it down and without pay. US currency is melting down, Liberals are
looking at it like stunned sheep.

Your government is broke.

You're an illiterate idiot. We're not interested in your continuing
failed attempts to "producing people."

I don't produce people, but I like producing people. You know, they do
something besides take social assistance and work for government. I
mean government really is social assistance in itself. One flaw in the
American constitution is that government slackers get to vote. Really,
government shouldn't be allowed to vote for itself.

You are obviously a leach, a parasite on the hind. Must suck to be you.

As I said, you're illiterate. "Will not be working and producing
people."

Your brain not big enough?

To understand gibberish from an idiot? Yes.

You've got plenty of paranoia about something that might or might not

The things I am worried about are happening right now. Social Security
and Medicare are in deficit today.
The job flight from the country is happening right now.
The fact that we are spending 166% of our revenue is a problem today.

I agree the congress is not addressing any of these problems
seriously, using this crisis to advance ideological agendas but I also
do not take the theater that seriously.

And their "deficit" is temporary. For example, the primary reason for
the SS deficit is low unemployment, and that will change in the next
year or so, then it's solvent for another 30 years.

Yet, you're just fine with making that situation worse, not paying
people for weeks if not months on end. How many people will default on
their houses? How many won't be able to pay their insurance or feed
their kids, pay for college, etc., etc.

You're just fine with all that, but zonkers paranoid about something
that may or may not happen in 30 years.

The theater is deadly serious for some people. You don't care about
them, apparently.
