Harry S Truman. That's the carrier my youngest son John served on as part
of VAW-126 during his Navy service. Two
deployments to support air ops in Iraq and Afghanistan .

"In October 2004, VAW-126 deployed aboard USS HARRY S. TRUMAN (CVN 75) to
the Arabian Gulf for a second deployment in support of Operation IRAQI
FREEDOM. During this highly intensive combat cruise, the SEAHAWKS surpassed
all previous records by flying 419 combat missions into Iraq, accumulating
more than 2000 flight hours in support of Operation IRAQI FEEDOM. In
December 2004, the squadron sent two aircraft from the Arabian Gulf to
Afghanistan in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM for the inauguration of
the first democratically elected president. This was the first time the
SEAHAWKS supported two separate campaigns simultaneously."

Until that war started, we'd get all the new Atlantic based carriers up here
within a year or so of deployment... the John C Stenis, the George
Washington, the Harry Truman
i can't remember if the Ronnie Reagan made it or not.
The old Coral Sea was a favourite visitor... as were the Essex, Wasp(or
Hornet ??) & Intrepid... back when we were growing up.

Interestingly, the "S" was his complete middle name.

Yup. Even the Navy puts a period after the "S" which is not technically
correct.

Then again, Harry even put a period behind the 'S' though...

http://www.trumanlibrary.org/speriod.htm

And the second paragraph says something about the mysterious "S"
as well.

Interesting that you have the former president's name spelled correctly
but the navy does not.

It is Harry S Truman, not Harry S. Truman. He was emphatic about not
having a period after the S in his name because, he said, he didn't have
a middle name, just an initial. I read that many years ago in a bio of
Truman.

Guess again, as someone else posted, he actually used a period in his
signature, and the period is used in the name of his library.
