Boat insurance help
I let my Allstate insurance lapse because the boat is on my trailer at
my Delta house. I won't put it back in the water until next spring. I'm doing some major and minor maintenance. I called Foremost (they have my 3 m/c covered) and they gave me a quote that was only $10 less than Allstate. So I'm thinking of returning to Allstate being that they have a local office and Foremost does not. Or is there another company out there that you folks might recommend? I need CA min. liability of 300K. The ACV of the boat is 22K but I'll insure for 17K to keep my premiums down. Allstate price is $303/yr. Thanks for any help Eddie 87 Regal 277XL |

I carry $1MM liability on my cars and it costs less than $100 per year over the typical $250K limits. On the boat, I have replacement coverage - not agreed value. If it's stolen, I can buy a new boat with only a $1K deductible. It pays to shop for insurance, Tim. |

I had a claim several years ago when a tree branch damaged my car. I took it to a reputable place here and it was all handled by Progressive (I had the cars with them at the time). The rental was covered, too. I've never had a claim on any of my boats and Progressive has a program that I think they call "diminishing deductible" where your deductible is reduced by 25% of it's original amount each year to $0 after four years of no claims. |

My dad did an online interview with Geico and compared his auto coverage with State farm to Geico and found out they were neck and neck. needless to say, dad didn't switch. Now I DO like the diminishing deducible clause. That's cool. |

GEICO called, and my dad had jsut paid his state farm premium, and the GEICO agent asked to compare coverage and rate. even the GEICO rep admitted they were even and couldn't beat it. Dad had a great driving record and had a claim when he slid his car on some black ice in February and Statefarfm fixed the Lincon with no hassle. Also hist a dear, and StateFarm covered that with no problem. I suppose there's always different experiences though. Taht's the way I feel about Country Companies. In my personal experiences they were the first to charge and the last for service, AND you have to be a Farm Bureau member to get their coverage, so there's an extra $40.00 a year extortion fee. |

A yacht policy is an agreed value policy. Also covers oil spills, and other boat accident stuff. If the boat is damaged, they repair up to the agreed value. Boat is totaled, you get the agreed value. BoatUS is that way. As to insurance of 1mm on the cars, I have $$500k and for an extra $240 a year, get a $2mm umbrella policy that covers a lot more than car accidents. |

My guess is that seasonal coverage with good limits, and full coverage, should run you $300-$400 per boat, per year, since you are in a rural area. |

You reminded me of another thing to look for - underwater obstructions. A friend of mine trashed his lower unit running over some unattended fishing line. It cut the seal behind the prop and emptied the lower unit oil. He was covered for that but had to pay his deductible. |
